 :D Sometimes my choir director gives me that old, wore - out excuse
"Its not how you sing it. Just as long as you're doin' it for the Lord"

And I say, "Really, what about giving God your BEST, huh?"

It's really a fine line when one uses that line and, in reality, should be married with your response.  ;) 8)

My response is something along the lines of being fit for the Master's use. Excellence in execution goes along with that, IMO.

Psalm 33 (New International Version)

Psalm 33

 1 Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous;
       it is fitting for the upright to praise him.

 2 Praise the LORD with the harp;
       make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.

 3 Sing to him a new song;
       play skillfully,
and shout for joy.

Bruh, you ain't gotta tell me.

That 'new song' portion can be a bear to deal with, as well.  ::) :-\
