1 thing you want to do is see of there is a song that goes with.
 most pastor i know would lead you to where he/she  want to go.
it not so much the chords you need to be on the spiritual wave that the pastor on. you are there to enhance or make a connection with the word
that was already spoken..

you can do progression to like

1-3-4

and then expand on it

stuff like that.  if you need a  file i can make a mp3
1 God, 1 Love,  God's Love
First you must EMPTY your cup.

Basically, any slow song will work.  After my pastor is done preaching I just do something like this. These chords work best with piano layered with strings.

Key of Eb  LH/RH  *means hold previous note(s)

Play slowly w/feeling:
Eb / G-Bb-Eb
*  / Bb-Db-Eb
*  / A-C-Eb
*  / F-Ab-B-Eb
*  / F-G-Bb-Eb

Eb / Db-Eb-Bb
*  / C-Eb-F-A
*  / B-Eb-F-Ab
*  / Bb-Eb-F-G

(you can also use these chords for the slow "Yes Lord" song, or just play them slowly)
Eb / G-Bb-Eb  (Yes Lord)
F / F-Ab-Eb
Gb / Gb-A-Eb
G / G-Bb-Eb   (Yes)
Ab / Ab-C-Eb  (Lord)
A / Gb-A-C-Eb  (Yes Lord)
D / C-F-Ab
G / B-Eb-F-Bb
C / Bb-Eb-G
F / B-Eb-F-Ab (Yes)
Bb / Bb-Eb-G  (Lord)
*  / Ab-Bb-Eb-F (Yes Lord)
*  / Ab-Bb-D-F
Eb / G-Bb-Eb (Yes Lord)
Gb / E-Bb-Eb
F / Eb-A-Eb
Bb / D-Ab-Eb
Eb / Db-G-C-Eb

You can try those and see what else you can come up with.
Real musicians play in every key!!!

I think that is really good advice. Staying on the same 'wavelength' as the preacher is essential!!!

Now a tip for beginners on soft chords while the preacher is talking...Real simple...

Take any fast song and completely slow it down....You will definitely get more ideas for chords if you associate it with songs you know how to play.....Sometimes I even take songs like Glory to His Name and make it slow to the point to no beat (like I Won't Complain)...Try that...
