I was called and asked to play for the church I'm playing for currently.
"We are getting drums, but we need someone who can play them. Will you play for us?"
They didn't ask me anything other than will I play for them. Now, the reality is, their were a few Methodist's churches that were forced to combine into one, and that made their congregation larger, and it made their music department better. Not to mention, quite a few of the members of the church left to go to that church, because something was happening over there.
So, they figured if they were going to
COMPETE, they had better bring in some music, at least. Instead getting one of the children in the church to play(...and there were quite a few parents upset that they hired someone to play when their child was eager to learn and play for free), they hired me.
Admittedly, when I met with the deacons and trustee's to discuss pay, they were all..."*rubs hands together* ... You know ... well ... we're not a big congregation ...and... well ... heh ... you know ....*rub hands*"

In any case...
...OH!!
...and I have had a few visiting Pastors try to steal me away WHILE THEY WERE AT THE CHURCH! "Hey, son ... is this your church? If so, how much are they paying you?" One of the deacons overheard one of the Pastors trying to steal me away, and he jumped in acting like it was all a joke ...... but he jumped in.
That is where many churches are nowadays. I'll be doggone if I'm going to play for free when the Pastor is making close to 1,000 a Sunday. No offense, but the people are sleeping when he's preaching, and bouncing all over the place when the music is being played.
