In Gospel, you have the 1_4_5, that's the building blocks of a song. The 5 goes back to the 1. Now you have progressions that will bring you to those points of a song, thats where "2_5_1" ,"7_3_6", " 5_1_4" come in.
The scale degrees are very useful in this:
MAJOR = 1
minor = 2
minor = 3
MAJOR = 4
MAJOR = 5
minor = 6
diminished = 7
MAJOR = 8
Now that's the scale degrees, they NEVER change, only the key!
Now the choice is up to you to choose what type of chord you want to associate with the progression(s), here are some generic progressions for the above.. all are for the key of C
"2_5_1"
DC / Gbdim7
GD / F6
EBb / DGC
~~~~~~~~~~~~
,"7_3_6"
BF / ADF,(Dm)
ED / Abdim7
AE / Am7
~~~~~~~~~~~
5_1_4"
GD / FABbD,( BbM7)
CBb / EABbD,( BbM7[b5] )
FC / Am7

Now look at the far left bass note! that your number, and root, the 2nd left hand note is either the 5th or dominant 7th. I have a chord chart that has options for what right hand chord you can use for your 1_4_5...just e-mail me if you want it! If you're not clear on anything I wrote here, let me know!
