Need your opinion: rig for live loops, etc
« on: June 21, 2010, 02:34:38 PM »
Fam, I need some advice.

Over the last few weeks I've been using Logic Pro on a MacBook during service for loops, etc. Typically what I'd do is record a short loop (shakers, congas, etc) at home and then send that through the house and the musicians' monitors.
That works well, but there's a couple of problems:
- switching between songs takes a few seconds, which can be a problem during service
- using the mouse, etc to control the laptop in a live situation can be fiddly

What I want to do is, essentially,
- play pre-recorded loops (it'd be great to switch loops in-song)
- trigger samples from my Yamaha S90

So, my question is: do you have any suggestions for how to improve the situation? Other programs (Ableton?) ? HW Sequencers?
What do you use for this purpose?

You can do this:

Since your loops are short, put them all at in the same project and marker each loop section and I usually use the space bar to start playing the loop.  Changing the tempo on the same project is simple IF you use the markers.
MERCY EN!!

I would use reason and create different patterns using the Rex Loop Player or Redrum. i tried that Sunday and it worked good for me. Since your loops are short you can get away with it. You could get a small USB Midi keyboard 25 key such as as Axiom 25 or something and then you can set your parameters to a button or knob and it will easier to change patterns without using the mouse. if you are going to go this route be prepared to read the manual lol..
