Ampeg Micro VR/SVT 210-AV or something else?
« on: November 18, 2010, 05:53:59 PM »
I've been looking for a lightweight rig for practice and smaller gigs to replace my Fender Bassman 100 (the older model with the 15, not the newer tiltback model with the 12). My first choice has been the Ampeg Micro VR (200 watts into 4 ohms, 150 watts into 8 ohms) paired with the SVT 210-AV cabinet (which weighs in at 27 pounds). The pair can be had for $600 new, Ampeg is offering a $100 rebate, I've played through it and I like the sound. I even sold the Bassman and my MIM Fender Jazz, so the money is there for a purchase.

So what's the problem?  ?/?

The problems are two fold: (1) every review I have read about the cabinet is that the Tolex will eventually begin to peel on the back; (2) my other head is a GK Backline 600 (300 watts into 4 ohms, 180 watts into 8 ohms) and why not just buy a 210 cabinet and use that?

On the other hand, I have been G.A.S.sing for that Ampeg mini-stack since I first saw it.  ::)

Thoughts? Suggestions? Recommendations?

Man I just love the Ampeg Bass Amps.  I looked at the Ampreg Micro VR/SVT 210 but my money was a little funny. So I went with the Ampeg BA115HP 220 watts Combo.  It was a little bit less expensive but still the same great sound.  But this is just one man's opinion, I say get the VR/SVT pair.
I play Lakland Fretless 55-01 with Bartolini MK1 pickups & Active PreAmp. Gallien Krueger 1001RB Amp

Ampeg             GK
10lbs               13 lbs
200 W @ 4       300 W @ 4
150 @ 8          180 W @ 8

I never heard them beside each other. Does the Ampeg color your sound differently?

If not seems to me like there isn't much of an advantage of switching to the Ampeg, because even though the GK weighs more its only 3lbs. You could always pair the GK with
the SVT 210 AV cab right?

[disclaimer: I really don't know much about what I'm talking about]

Thanks, MikeGee! I just ordered one. Unfortunately, I won't get it until after the first of the year.  :(
