Heeeeeeeeeell is a hot place (I don't wanna go)

*SENDS ME IN EVERY TIME (in stitches)*

And the vamp?  KILLER!!!!!!!

Oh, and "Hey Y'all" was recorded by Wanda Nero Butler.  I think I still have that on cassette.

That's the vamp to "Hell is a Hot Place".  LOL!  The leader says "do you wanna go to hell" and the congregation answers with "hell no".

The first time we heard that during praise and worship at a holiness church in Memphis, the usher had to bring me a Kleenex and I am so glad she didn't ask why I was smiling (fighting laughter) and crying at the same time!!!!!!!!

Eventually, I had to walk outside and call my mama...who STILL doesn't believe that's a song.

When I was younger I was listening to Donnie McClurkin's Live in London...and More CD and in this medley one of the songs go:

I am under the rock
Rock that's higher than I
Jehovah hide me
I am under the rock
Go tell my enemies I am under the rock
Jehovah hide me
I am under the rock

Even though I knew what they meant I still stopped when they said, "Go tell my enemies I am under the rock".  So much for hiding.  :D

I completely missed that.  GOOD ONE!  Why tell my enemies where I am?  LOL!  But I guess if the Rock is Jesus they still can't mess with ya...  ?/?

Koda, that happens to be one of my old school faves. LOL! But yeah, good point.  :-\ :D :D

-------------------------------

I discovered between last night and tonight that Jamaicans just had the most "creative" songs (as depicted by Wolfie's video).  :D

Another one of my faves, which isn't that weird necessarily, but it was another instance where my friends and I sang the wrong words because we really didn't know.

Press along saints, press along in God's own way
Press along saints, press along, in God's own way
Persecution you must bare, trials and conflict all the day
De harder de battle de sweeter de victory!!

(We used to sing "de hotta de watah de sweeta de victory!")  And I'm still trying to figure out exactly what pressing along "in God's own way" means... lol

Oh and Koda, another part of that medley which is commonly sung in the Jamaican Apostolic churches:

Jesus name so sweet, Emanuel name so sweet
Jesus name so sweet, Emanuel name so sweet (repeat)
Every rock me rock upon Jesus, Jesus name so sweet

Needless to say, that last line kinda makes you pause... LOL

And when it starts getting good, they change it up:

Every turn me turn upon Jesus, Jesus name so sweet

or

Every shake me shake upon Jesus, Jesus name so sweet

or whatever the leader feels like singing.  :D

LaRue!!!

You must've been Apostolic or something! ;)

We sang both of the first two songs you posted, except that all of our songs were either jazzy or bluesy. We didn't really do many old hymns.

These are "AB" type songs, as Jermaine would call them:

Take the Lord along with you, every where you go!
Take the Lord along with you, every where you go!

He's a well of water, in my soul.
He's a well of water, in my soul.

God is not dead, he's yet alive!
God is not dead, he's yet alive!

I made a vow to the Lord, and I won't take it back!
I made a vow to the Lord, and I won't take it back!

....and others:

God is already here, can't you feel his presence, he's already here.
All you got to do, is open up your heart for he's already here.
(repeat)

Victory, victory shall be mine.
Victory, victory shall be mine.
If I hold my peace, let the Lord fight my battles, victory victory shall be mine.
(then you change "Victory" for "peace", "joy", "love", "happiness", etc.)

Don't let the devil ride. Don't do it!
Oh, don't....let the devil ride. Don't do it!
If you let him ride, he's sure gonna drive, don't let him ride.
(subsitute "ride/drive" for other combinations)

I say yes, to my Lord!
I say yes, to my Lord!
He's done great things!
He's done great thing!
I say yes, yes, yes, to my Lord!

(and the tarrying song)
Power, power Lord!
Power, power Lord!
Need more power, power Lord!
Need more power, power Lord!
Holy ghost power, power Lord!
Holy ghost power, power Lord!

Those are the types of songs that we sang. Songs like "Give and it shall come back to you" didn't start until mid 90s. We didn't do praise and worship. It looked like the singers were putting on a show to us.

Lol!  That one's in the medley too.  For a while I thought I was just having a genuinely hard time understanding him and he was probably saying something that someone else who listens to that type of music could decipher.  On the CD it sounds like he's saying "Every ron me rock upon Jesus, Jesus name so sweet".  But you're right, it does make you pause.  :D :D

You know what, that's why I love/loved congregational songs! They let you have freedom! You can play them any kind of way and don't have to worry about hooks and turns as much. I always say this: whenever I meet a musician, I always ask them to play one of the above songs. If you can make those songs sound good, and be creative with it, then you can make any song sound good, because it's very easy to get stuck in a pattern.

If the musician and song leader were creative, you could sing those same songs every Sunday, and it wouldn't get boring--at least to me.

...It's also easy to break into a shout, then start a new song when it's finished. It just flowed like that.

SOOOOO true. I've been watching Jamaican church vids all day today with tears in my eyes. I didn't realize how much I miss REAL church and how liberating our praise is/was. Little by little, we have moved so far away from church the way it used to be. I guess in some respects, the changes have been beneficial, but in SO MANY OTHER respects, it hasn't been. We're just not free like that anymore. Even the churches that consider themselves to be "free" (like mine) aren't free in comparison to how church used to be; we're only free in comparison to the churches around us in this day and time.

Wow.

(Oh, and all those songs you listed, we sang, except God is already here, can't you feel His presence. I've never heard that one). My former church still sings them all, especially "take the Lord 'long with you, everywhere you go..." that's a house favorite!

I realize it may be kinda comical, especially if that's not what you're accustomed to seeing... but after a good laugh (lol) just look at the liberty, the sincerity, the genuineness and freedom... no stress, no trying to remember notes, no focus on the musicianship, or how long the song is, or whether they're in the right key or who's leading which part or what comes next... just genuine, heartfelt, FREE vertical praise... it's all so vertical. Nowadays, ministry is so horizontal.

They're just so happy. So carefree in their place of refuge. So safe and happy and smiling and free...

Don't get me wrong. I'm the #1 advocate of excellence in ministry... I'm just saying... I miss that kind of church.

I've had that song on my favs for a while now. I was showing my dad because his minister friend is from Jamaica and wants him to go over there with him when he goes back. I love the free-ness of their praise.

The music reminds me of the Nigerian songs we sang in Korea.

This is a video of me on the piano.
Me Playing 9JA-Style Praise

Although I liked the worship, I did tire of the "CCM" style patterns all the time. LOL I wanted to do some Gospel-style changes. ;D ;D I told you we did thing jazzy/bluesy in my old church.
