Nothing but love for this talented brother.

To those fools who have questioned/criticized choices George has made or things he has participated in his career... (my position on this is assuming that he is a believer) I say let's let our heavenly Father have his way with his child. If George in fact does belong to the Lord, then we have to trust that God is the author and finisher of his faith, and has him where he needs to be. If his heart is far from the Father or near to the Father is only known BY the Father and those believers who are actually in true community with him. I'm not endorsing anything here. I'm simply saying that God is infinitely wiser than us. If you were in a position of discipleship with George, then maybe you'd be able to speak into his life privately with him...but you're not, you're a fool on an internet forum talking smack about a stranger. How crazy is it that we would have such a lack of love and grace for this brother when our Father sees him as accepted and loved not by his performance as a Christian, but purely by the grace given to him in Christ. Sad when guys on this forum act more like wolves when they see a sheep, one of God's own, who are clearly struggling and would rather cast stones than pray. Usually it's the kid on the computer in his boxers eating a bowl of cereal his mom made him with an Xbox controller in the other hand probably wondering which porn site to visit next.

Two things.  Hype and money.  I hope people are getting their fair share of both because a gig like Lady GaGa is a musical downgrade.

But let's just assume the position of lady GaGa.  The more people who line up to audition for the gig, the less it will pay.

Mcdonald's will put an ad in the paper for general labor workers...and may the best man win.  But the real high paying executive positions in the Mcdonald's corp are never posted to the public.  Those jobs are more qualifying and are not capable of being fulfilled by your average "youtube" watcher.

My comment is directed towards George's career.  From Tye to Jill Scott, to the experimental trio he had with Thad and Parris, he was nothing short of phenomenal.  George has one of the most profound expressions on drums but playing gigs like Diddy and GaGa are too controlling.  As a drummer on those gigs, everyone is too easily replaceable.  There is little to no character that can be displayed in the music so they wont miss you when you leave.  Its play this, and play that.  Furthermore, those gigs are not steady, ever changing band members and in most cases, they don't pay that well.  Thats why hype is pretty much the main factor.  Its highly unlikely that musical fulfillment will be found in those situations.

Musical fulfillment isnt everything. Sometimes you need hype to further your career. I think the Lady Gaga gig is a good business move for him.

I agree 100%  Lady Gaga can be a great business move for anyone but something else has to happen.  Something risky.  Something that will cost a monetary investment.  Something a lot of people are afraid to do, which brings me to my next point.

There are a lot of musicians in LA with extensive resumes who can't pay their rent.  They never made that extensive resume work for them.  The only way to do that is to eventually start your own business.  Your own group or band or whatever puts your name on the ticket.  Otherwise, it really doesn't matter who you play for or who you played for.

Musicians are always getting pimped by artists but there is a way to flip the game.  Branch out and start your own.  Or, as you can clearly see, in the next year or two, you will be posting an interesting video of Lady Gaga's new drummer.  There was one before.  There will be one after.

After watching both vids I think you may have a point about Diddy but not so much about Gaga.

In both his videos he already said he was working on his own CD, a CD with his group, a clothing line, and a new drum stick.  The OP said he posted this video because he's a fan of Spanky, not because he's a fan of Lady Gaga and happens to like her drummer.

This is why I stated in my first post that I hope he's getting his fair share of hype and/or being paid well to support goals like those.  I hope he follows through with all of his plans and I wish him and everyone else the very best of luck.  We need more young black musicians to become stable instead of touring with the latest teenaged rockstar until they're 40 and dying broke.  Its all about growth and development.  Best wishes to everyone trying to do something out here.

Well I'll say this...

I don't think its right for you to consider (what you call) "Musical Fulfillment" a factor is whether a gig is worth taking or not. IF you appreciate ALLLLLLLLLLL styles of music, which I'm almost SURE that Spank does, then you wouldn't worry about if the gig is (once again, what YOU call) "Controlling". It's more like playing the gig with Discipline. Its about being a MUSICIAN bro. Not a "Drummer". Just because the gig doesn't call for playing all of your chops and licks and such, doesn't mean it cant be fun. Its about the ENERGY and the Vibe my man.

I'm sure there are some cats up there that would LOVE to play for Jill Scott or Kayne, or Tye Trib. And I'm also sure there are a different set of cats out there that would HATE to take those gigs that I just previously mentioned. So its just a matter of the type of music you have respect for. So if Spank love doing the GaGa gig, then let him do it bro WITHOUT DOWNTALKING IT!!! I'm sure there are PLENTLY of musicians out there that would HATE to play your jazz gigs or they would also consider them a "Musical Downgrade" Thats why we all have the freedom to CHOOSE what type of music we want to play. You feelin' me bro?

(NONE of this was written with the intent of offense. Just trying to share my opinion of the insight)
