Right Hand Chord Theory Help?
« on: October 08, 2003, 03:16:48 PM »
First, I hope this question make sense?!

Ok...I'm a beginner to all the various chord progessions. But, I've grasped the basic "theory" behind each of them fine so far.

Key of C

2 = D
5 = G
1 = C
But what I having a hard time grasping, is the right hand chords use in relationship to the 2-5-1 bassline. For example:

L.H/R.H.

D/F A C E...??
G/F A B D....??
C/E G B D....??

How did the composer arrive at these right hand chords? There has to be a theory/formula behind this?

Can anyone Help??:oops:[/b]

In Gospel, you have the 1_4_5, that's the building blocks of a song. The 5 goes back to the 1. Now you have progressions that will bring you to those points of a song, thats where "2_5_1" ,"7_3_6", " 5_1_4" come in.

The scale degrees are very useful in this:

MAJOR = 1
minor = 2
minor = 3
MAJOR = 4
MAJOR = 5
minor = 6
diminished = 7
MAJOR = 8

Now that's the scale degrees, they NEVER change, only the key!
Now the choice is up to you to choose what type of chord you want to associate with the progression(s), here are some generic progressions for the above.. all are for the key of C

"2_5_1"

DC / Gbdim7
GD / F6
EBb / DGC
~~~~~~~~~~~~
,"7_3_6"
BF / ADF,(Dm)
ED / Abdim7
AE / Am7
~~~~~~~~~~~

5_1_4"

GD / FABbD,( BbM7)
CBb / EABbD,( BbM7[b5] )
FC / Am7
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now look at the far left bass note! that your number, and root, the 2nd left hand note is either the 5th or dominant 7th. I have a chord chart that has options for what right hand chord you can use for your 1_4_5...just e-mail me if you want it! If you're not clear on anything I wrote here, let me know!
Steely,
  I understand exactly what you mean.  Hammond man already  explained that it is based on the scale degrees.  So lets look at the progression you had in question.
D/F A C E
G/F A B D
C/E G B D
Don't always look at it as "the right hand chord".  Look at it as the entire chord, both hands combined.
D/F A C E   = Dm9 (D minor 9)
G/F A B D  = G13 (G thirtheen chord)
C/E G B D  =  C9
If I played for example:
L.H. / R.H.
C G / E E      or
C G / E G
What chord would these be???  It will be a C Major chord.  It doesn't make a difference what order the notes are in, as long at all the (essential) notes are there.
:)
