I came cross a symbol like it several times in progressions but never knew what it meant, would somebody help me.

it means to repeat whatever was in the previous measure.

True. If there is a number like "2" over it repeat the last 2 measures, etc.
Used a lot in percussion and lead sheet chord charts...

Yeah, that's a shorthand way of writing a repeat sign w/out using sheet music.
