Favorite gospel bass song list
« on: July 15, 2011, 09:30:14 AM »
I am on the hunt for some suggestions on the best & most inspirational gospel bass playing that has challenged and inspired the bassists here that also could push other bassists further into their playing. I want to get some songs together to practice along to basically.

Maybe we could build up a little list of bass playing gold where people can contribute their favorite songs which features the coolest bass playing, maybe with a short description on why they like the bass parts? This doesn't have to have the most complicated bass playing, but just simply awesome, soulful, holy ghost anointed bass playing. If there is a youtube clip that would be cool too of course.

Here's a few of mine:

John P. Kee - God of Mercy (Rain On Us)  Complicated runs but full of soul
Hezekiah Walker - I'll Be Satisfied
Hezekiah Walker - Lift Him Up - Simply awesome shout runs and all over the place  ;D

Suggestions and opinions please   ;D

I thought about Fred, I love Keep on Praisin and Your Grace, except the bass is quite simple, any suggestions?

Check out his "Pages of Life" Live CD with Terrance Palmer on bass.  "Let the Praise Begin" is a good one.

James Hall's first two CDs are good.

Ricky Dillard's last CD (can't remember the title right now) has some good bass work.

I really like the Youthful Praise "Resting on His Promise" CD

Isaiah Thomas and Elements of Praise "The Greatest" (with Morgan Turner on bass) has some great bass work on it.

Fred Hammond:
Destiny- It just grooves
Let me Praise You Now- ummm...cus I just like it lol
He's God- Bass drives the song.
My Deliverer (from the In Case You Missed It... cd)

*Check out the Purpose by Design Las Vegas concert DVD, the first 20 minutes is just pure bass heaven lol*

Hezekiah Walker:
How Much We Can Bear- intro is sick and riffs in the vamp are lovely
I Will Go- Another bass intro, different bass player
Free to Praise Him (From the Live in London DVD, I'm not sure if it's on a cd)

Precious Lord take my hand
Lead me on, help me stand

Of course this is a classic clip from Sharay Reed playing impossible bass with an impossible groove  ;)

The song is - Joy To The World, but is this down on record?

Bass groovy delightfulness...

Wait till you get to "Focus on You Reprise" and "I Will Bless The Lord".  The whole CD is a bass clinic.

I had the pleasure of seeing Isaiah Thomas minister live on Saturday.  He did I Will Bless the Lord, Said he would be with me and another song (I can't remember the name right now).  He had one of the tightest bands I've ever seen.
