Once you guys post your answers go on and pick up your ax, your big mamma, your brown sugar,  your partner, your BASS!! and check yourself. After you guy post your answer continue working on the same progressions and the sound of your interval shapes.  In a few days I'll give you guys the next set of progression to work on. Between then and now I might just throw in another "POP QUIZ"!!! ;D

PS: This should be "hilarious" I got this idea from Bass4God. What are some of the names you guys call your bass...He call his "Big mamma",  I call mines "BROWN SUGAR" ;D and you call yours...

1-4-5 in Donnie McClurkins song I think I hear the 4 and 5 as passing tones in John P. Kee's song. I hope I'll eventually get the hang of this.

Okay guys the answer is 1-7-6 for the first two songs the third song has the 1-4-5 progression and the forth song has the 1-7-6 progression. Pick up your bass and play along with the songs. The next set of numbers I want you to work on is: 1-3-6 and 2-5-1. You know the routine, a minimum of 10 minutes a day, different rhythms, tempos etc... Continue working on the previous sets of numbers as well. Ear training is a continuous process WE ARE TRAINING OUR EARS TO RECOGNIZE A CERTAIN GROUP OF NUMBERS.

This has changed my approach to learning songs. I need to listen for the progression before the key.

Is song 1 in the key of F#/Gb?
F# and Gb are identical in pitch but written differently according to the key in which they occur (Enharmonic) when playing by numbers it doesn't matter which one you use for your root note.(the "1") Pick up your bass and play a 4-5-6 in F#. Then play a 4-5-6 in Gb...same sound right? Now if you use note names the 4-5-6 in F# would be: B-C#-D# and in the key of Gb the 4-5-6 would be: B-Db-Eb...

Man, I blew the last ones very badly.  I can only say that I was being distracted by my grandkids when I was doing it,  but that's no excuse.  I'm gonna look them over again.

Hey Berbie, we're breaking these song down into little pieces the only numbers we're listen for are the 1-7-6 and  the 1-4-5 we're not worrying about the other number right now. I added two more sets of numbers to work on the 1-3-6 and the 2-5-1.

I got you, Arthur59.  I just need to listen a little closer and stay in parameters and learn those well.  I am listening to the songs posted again without my bass to get a better handle on the tones in my mind and to verify the progressions.  I'll also be ready for the next lessons.  The lessons are very informative and helpful.

I also want you guys to spend a minimum of 10 min a day working on listing to the sound of  the major interval shapes. Don't just play the major scale but listen to the sound of each interval in relation to the root note ( the "1") lets stay in the key of "Db major"

Play the 1 then play the 2 (major 2nd) listen to that sound what does that sound remind you of associate that sound with a color any color you like. Then play the "1" and the 3 (major 3rd) listen to that sound, what does that sound remind you of. Associate that sound with a color. Then play the "1" and the "4" ( perfect 4th )   what does that sound remind you of, associate that sound with a color. Then play the "1" and the 5 ( perfect 5th ) associate that sound with a color. then play the "1" and the 6 (major 6th ) add a color to it what does that sound remind you of. Then play the "1 and the "7" ( major 7th )...... then play the "1" and the "8" ( perfect unison )

Don't rush this pay attention to the details of the sound of each interval and compare the sound with each other. Compare the 1 and the 2 with the 1 and the 3. compare the 1 and the 3 with the 1 and the 6 etc...
YOU SHOULD BE DOING THIS EVERYDAY AS PART OF YOUR EAR TRAINING ROUTINE.
