Ear Training
« on: May 16, 2014, 08:34:26 AM »
I need help.  I can not hear what key a singer is singing in.  How do I train my ear???

I can play in most of my keys, play chords and progression, but my ear is not there.  Can someone help me?

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;  Colossians 3:23

If you mean just by listening,  I don't think a whole lot of people can.  Only the very experienced.  Most have to play notes to find the key.  You're trying to match the notes played to the singer's voice without playing too many notes.  If you can match the one, you're home free, usually.  The one will sound decent with most of the notes of the song. A good practice is just to turn on you tube to a gospel list of songs and pick up the keys of the songs using your board.  Also, there might be tutorials on YouTube.

This is not easy for me either.  Two things I'm doing to make it better is

Listen to the radio
1.  Try to pick out the Melody and determine the key from the scale
2.  Try to listen to the bass movement to determine the progression.
