One of the bands I play with works a lot in this stuff. Many nights we will play hours sliding in and out of written songs but 90% will be pure improv. Anybody else do this stuff.
Here are a couple examples from conferences we have done in the last year or so.

Its kinda like people getting to see you before the finished product. I think it is cool at times but can also be annoying from a listener standpoint if you don't know when its time to stop. :D This was done a lot in the old Pentecostal church and still is but now is seeing a revival of it.
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.

I've done the spontaneous worship thing before, but my current church arrangement (3 services every Sunday) does not allow for it due to time constraints.

And I'll echo what Mm said; sometimes it can be a wonderful worship experience, but far too many times as a listener I've discerned some self-indulgence on the part of the performers and witnessed the "us 4 and no more" experience where many in the congregation just check out and are done way before the band is.
That said, I dig a lot of what I hear coming out of Bethel and IHOP and Jesus Culture, etc...even Israel Houghton has those times of improv worship where you can easily get overwhelmed by God's presence.
Music theory is not always music reality.

You are right in that if you are not in the environment at the time it can be hard to get what's actually going on with the Spirit at the event when you hear or see it on playback. However if you are there and the crowd has as you say "checked out" something is very wrong.
Examples.

In every one of these clips the entire service was flowing and we were providing the backdrop to what was going on.
I record when we are out because you never know what will come out and you can go back and write from the spontaneous interludes. This is where most of the material that is being released from places like IHOP and Betel is birthed.
I work with a regional IHOP affiliate ministry.

This was a really cool night in particular with stuff coming from us on stage but also the minster for the night walking in the crowd giving words in song with the mic and the sounds of the shofar you see being played in the right of the frame by the lady in the back.

Over the years we have had particular experiences in worship events that did not make sense at the time.
This night for example at the time was odd as we had been very soft and flowing in the past here but this night our set became suddenly quite radical and very war like. https://app.box.com/shared/a1r8xxbevg
Later we came to realize that a radical Homosexual movement had just formed an ART District non Profit group for the area we were in and were openly promoting the area as a Bohemian Ghetto, Gay Ghetto and Gayborhood.
In the coming months after this many of us who were in leadership positions in the area were openly and quite viciously attacked but at this time we were clueless and that night were going where did THIS come from and what up here??
Now a few years down the road we understand what we were sensing that night as we were standing in the area that became ground zero in a war!

Played a 27 hour event this last Friday night October 24 2014 with a group of musicians made up with members from our IHOP affiliate the Birmingham Prayer Furnace and our sister IHOP affiliate from Montgomery the Montgomery House of Prayer. No rehearsal no music no set list just 2 hours of continuous flow.
Here is a clip from the set.

I've been thinking about having a worship night similar to this for a few years now. I actually have a few things I want to do. One thing I want to do is get a group of people together and do one hour of straight worship. This mightsound selfish lol but I only want a few people that will worship the whole time and not worrying about anybody else. I just want to see if anything different would happen after an hour. I believe this would actually be a difficult task somewhat because it's hard to find people who would do that for that long and be focused on God. Plan on doing it one day but have not set it up yet. I'm going to put a CD of worship music together and try it at some point. It would be nice to have live music but that's something for later.
