What Separates Professional Musicians from Average Musicians
« on: October 21, 2014, 09:30:43 AM »
Saw this post and it got me thinking What does separate professional musicians from average musicians.

The number one answer is the thinking

If you can change your thinking instead of your actions your outlook would be exceptional.

What does everyone think of that? Of course there is more than just that but I found this to be interesting

Confidence and character more so than talent.

I agree with PianoClubhouse,  professionalism has more to do with character than the actual talent. Its pretty pointless to have a great musician on your church staff who is always 30 minutes late for Sunday service.

Dedication to bettering themselves and their skill. "Proffesionalism" sometimes goes out the window when the rank of professional is achieved :p

Attitude and aptitude.
I know of a few great players who have bad attitudes and are difficult to work with. They don't get called back for gigs, if they even get called at all. A few things to remember: be courteous, be on-time, be open to change, don't argue with the leader, say 'thank you', remain teachable, etc...
And you have to know how to play your instrument, know how to play with others and know your gear. Pro gigs = time is money. If it's a gig that required you to practice the songs beforehand, do that! Rehearsal is NOT the time to learn the songs (unless you've been given zero info prior to rehearsal). Be able to set up fast and get a good tone fast. And be stylistically diverse.

An average musician keeps themselves restricted and in a box. A pro musician sees every opportunity as a chance to expand and be fresh and expressive.
Music theory is not always music reality.

My late cousin used to always say.....

"Amateurs practice until they get it right.  Professionals practice until they never get it wrong".
FAITH unites people
RELIGION divides FAITH

This^^^^

I think you mentioned this before (a while back).  Since then, I have patterned my performance after this statement.
