Most churches don't put music to those old hymns, but ours do, lol. Here are some basic chords that can get you through hymns like these:
Key Cm LH/RH
Cm: C / Eb-G-C Guide me
Gm7: G / F-Bb-D ohhh Thou
Cm: C / Eb-G-C great Je-
Gm7: G / F-Bb-D hovah,
Gm7 or G7#5: G / F-Bb-D, F-G-B-Eb pilgrim
Cm: C / Eb-G-C through this
Cm: C / Eb-G-C barren
G7#5 or G7#5#9: G / F-G-B-Eb or G / B-Eb-F-Bb land,
(stop, let them read the next lines)
Cm: C / Eb-G-C I am
Cm: C / Eb-G-C weak, but
Fm7: F / Eb-Ab-C Thou art
Cm: C / Eb-G-C mighty,
Cm: C / Eb-G-C hold me
Gm7: G / F-Bb-D with Thou
Gm7 or G7#5: G / F-Bb-D, F-G-B-Eb powerful
Cm: C / Eb-G-C hand,
That's pretty much the basic pattern that I stick to. When you're stuck on a particular chord for a long time, you can make it flow better by putting a little bass line with it or adding in some runs and stuff.
