Trying to Advance
« on: August 19, 2015, 01:00:11 PM »
Hey LGM,

I've been playing Piano (classically) for abt 7 years so I'm pretty much at an intermediate level.
However I'm having trouble with trying to get to the next level. I can play Hymns & some worship/congregational songs but they sound "white church" style/ boring.

I currently play in a small SDA church in England (predominantly Black) . People say I'm good but I want to gospel-ize/Contemporise/Urbanise my playing.
I can kinda hear the Urban chords in my head but I'm struggling to play them on the Piano.
I've searched around on Google for a course but am not sure which one I should buy.

What are your recommendations???

Thank You & God Bless.

I'd like to help :-D

Give us some examples of your playing?  Write out how you play a typically song or your favorite chord progression.

Also who are some of your favorite gospel artists or keyboard players? Who's style do you like?

Alot of the sound that you're looking for is through using different chord voicings and how you play your progression in other words how you flow between chords adding various passing chords.

I am currently working my way through some courses at present.
Take a look at my website for some pointers on which courses to take.
Most of the courses in the Play by Ear section will teach you how to play contemporary gospel.
I am also in the UK (Birmingham)  where are you?

Hey Guys,

In the end I ended up buying the Gospel Musicians' Urban & Contemporary Worship Xtreme.

Thanks though for your replies.
