If I'm understanding you correctly the numbers that you mentioned 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 represents the notes that you play on the keyboard. For example

Key of C
C  D  E   F  G  A  B  C
1  2  3   4   5  6  7  1

Those numbers are called scale degrees.  They represent the notes of the major scale.  These numbers are useful for figuring out how to form certain chords and also to help you play stuff in other keys more easily.
