Circle of fifth
« on: May 13, 2005, 08:16:02 AM »
I am new in taking piano lessons at the age of 23.  I am getting discouraged in taking my lessons because I feel that I am not progressing.  Is this a common feeling in newcomers to the piano?  Also, I am learning about the circle of fifth.  Can anyone please help me to understand it better because I don't understand it?  If you can refer me to a site with some handouts and an easy interpretation of the circle of fifths I would be indebted to your gratitude.  Thanks! Please help me ASAP!

One9,

Do you know your basic major scales?   :D  You will need to know your scales in order to understand the circle.

Once you know your scales, then you can start on any key on the board, take a perfect fifth of that note, and keep doing that in succession until you get back to the original note.  When you get to each perfect fifth, you play a chord based on that note.  You can use this method to practice your playing.

You can do the same thing with fourths.  The fourths go one way around the circle, and the fifths go in the opposite direction.  :D

HTH,
God bless,

Does that include me knowing all of the scales?  All the flats and sharps....Is this a hard concept to grasp?  Do you know of any websites that will help me to better grasp this concept?
