Don't use it if you are serious about playing and will be playing for years to come.

Imagine the LGM police are standing by you, one hand on their holsters.

"REMOVE YOUR FINGER FROM THE TRANSPOSE BUTTON. SLOWLY STEP AWAY. WE REPEAT . . . . REMOVE YOUR FINGER FROM THE TRANPOSE BUTTON AND SLOWLY STEP AWAY. "

I used to use it every now and then, when a song was fast and I didn't have a bass player, but recently, ever since I started doing some dexterity exercises, I'm finding it easier to play in those keys. Now, A and E are the only ones that I can't do real effectively, at least not the way I like to play. If there's a bass player, though, I can play in all of them equally.

Try getting the Virtuoso Pianist in 60 Exercises book by C. L. Hanon. This is helping my dexterity a lot. I just ordered the Jazz and Salsa Hanon books too. For me, I can play well when the timing for both my hands are together or about the same; if they're extremely different then I have struggles in some keys.

Take it from someone who's being delivered by the spirit of transposition: don't do it. Here's a list of reasons why the T word is bad for you:
You won't be able to play a real piano
It's harder to communicate with other musicians halfway through a song
You can't just look at the hands of another keyboard player when you get lost
When you are using someone else's board you have to find out where the magic combination is
Changing keys in a song doesn't sound as smooth[/list:u]
    etc etc

Plus, I noticed that since I stopped using it sometimes my hands stumble on interesting patterns/chords which I would've never seen playing in the same old keys.

true words here, anyone who wants to take thier playing to a higher level should practice everykey, i'm also doing this myself, transposing is a crash course that'll eventually crash u when u get on a real piano.

i also notice most respeondents to this topic are quite experienced and so i cherish good advice from them.

God's love and mine

Transpose-->C.L. Hanon
« Reply #14 on: May 16, 2005, 07:55:07 AM »
So, that's what that little buttons for...  :D

Just kidding. I have a little keyboard at home, but it sounds kind of wimpy. However, even though I'm new to playing, I've noticed that when I use my piano which has a much better sound, that transpose button does me no good.

Plus since I'm just learning stuff now, I figure why not just go ahead and learn all the keys.

I have this book. Everytime I open it, I just shudder and close it again. It just looks intimidating. I've been trying to tell myself, just go ahead and do it. But, good grief why does it have to look that way.

Is there anything besides Hanon? And, don't think I haven't noticed that most traditionally trained musician TRULY believe tht this man really has the answer to improving dexterity and range on the piano.

Reasons to stray away from using the deadly transpose.

1. You won't ever get comfortable in other keys because you will never try them.

2. When you go out to other churches, they may not always have a transposer available. Then you get hung out to dry on a soloist or when the preacher tunes up.

3. Sometimes you'll forget that you have the instrument transposed. This causes very amusing situations. When you go to the next song, the choir is too high or too low. You can usually tell by their faces  8O . This also happens to the next choir that comes up behind yours. I can guarentee that they will not know how to untranspose it, so don't leave out during the offering in second services. LOL

4. The lastly, other musicians that play with you can tell sometimes. Unfortunatly, some of them will look down on you.

Please don't use the transpose key! I can testify lol.

Our church was having a mortgage burning service. EVERYONE was there (church supporters, friends, etc.). *looks over shoulder to see if he's near* My brother, bless his heart, transposed the piano to play with a choir member who was playing another instrument. I get up to play after they get finished (also, not knowing about the transpose) to play "Oh, How Wondrous" for the choir... As you can imagine the sopranos and altos were dragging their voices on the ground trying to hit those notes lol.  :( A very bad situation.

Hey , I just want to echo what everyone else is saying.  I've cheated a few times with the transpose button myself.  Be careful, because it is so easy to become dependent on it and once you stop using it's like going through withdrawal.  Don't limit what you can learn because transposing makes it easy.
