I know when I started my choir from scratch I went around to people that I knew could sing
I advise a campus choir and although I know this doesn't work this way with community choirs, I want to share something that our last campus choir president mentioned that I thought showed quite a bit of maturity on their part.
This choir, and I know I'm biased, but this choir has the best sound of any choir I've heard. And I know of a couple of other choirs that share the same basic principle and sound great.
The choirs do not audition for singers. In fact, this president stated that they don't look for the best voices, but rather the right spirit. So anybody willing to submit to their principles of witnessing for Christ can join.
Now, of course most of these kids have great voices, but I imagine in following that principle, a couple of these kids probably wouldn't be the one that you would walk up to and say, "Hey, you sound good. Would you like to be in my choir?"
But, praise be to God. These kids were working on a higher principle. I would love to see them with their own CD. I just have no idea how to help them.
I think one of the difficulties choirs created apart from the umbrella of a church face, is that you to have remember that although some will find the singing entertaining, we don't sing for entertainment sake. We sing to glorify God.
Good luck with your choir.
