HOW LONG DID IT TAKE B4 UR RUN SPEED WAS FAST???
« on: June 02, 2005, 05:11:12 AM »
I was wondering how long did it take you guys (Organ players)  did it take before you could do you rorgan runs at a fast speed without making mistakes?

My  main problem is, when I do my runs they're so slow......And sometimes I forget what scale I was runing..Its really getting on my nerves because I know aLL THE notes, I just seem  to slow down after a certin note.......What can this be?........lol.......... Whenn I'm playing with a band I play blues and old school organ soul tunes....Could it be that since I've been playin' these types of tunes, it has stopped my organ RUN speed???

I don't think playing that music will slow down your run speed, that's mostly all I play.

One thing, if there is a certain point where you notice it slows down, work it out!  Make sure you're staying relaxed.  A lot of musicians get stressed when they keep trying to work out a problematic section and start tensing up, that will hurt your speed a lot.

One thing that I do, no lie, I stop every so often and go into a prayer and meditation session.  Keep returning to that.  If you start getting frustrated, get away from the instrument.  This will help you stay relaxed.
Thanks for letting me hang with you guys!

I just started back doing a little more runs. I've been mostly a chording-type person. With that, I've been practicing chromatic runs, these seem to help  build some speed for me. I think also practicing some runs built on chords will help improve your accuracy.

....also try using a metronome when you practice.

A word about speed - What I used to tell my students who wanted speed "right now" - Imagine that you're practicing to be a target shooter. You go the the gun range and blast em off just as fast as you can pull the trigger. OK, you're done. You can go home now...... What did that guy just accomplish from his "target practice"? Nothing.

Accuracy always comes first. Speed comes naturally with expierence.
the trick to playing runs quickly is to position your fingers over the keys in that run first...... then it's a matter of just dropping your fingers in succession.

For me F is the quickest key. If I was doing a run in F :

F -> Ab -> Bb

B natural  -> C -> Eb

It's broken into TWO groups.

Thumb -> 1st finger -> 2nd finger

Thumb -> 1 -> 2

That is the ascending pattern.

For descending, I use my 4th finger on B natural.
Also, I use my 4th finger on the top note of a turn around.

Practice the first group (3 notes) - then the second group - then work on your crossover (thumb under 2nd finger).... then you can put it all together.

Using that fingering, and prepositioning my fingers over the appropriate keys, I literally can play the Blues Runs so fast that it sounds like a glissando - no joke.

How long it will take you to develop speed is up to how much you practice EVERY DAY..........

Good Luck
