You may believe it, but I know for a fact that southeast Michigan turns out a tremendous amount of talent. I dont live in Detroit but I know for a fact that in Pontiac there are sooo many people trying to break into the music industry and I think that it is a big fad right now..EVERYWHERE!!! LOL. Detroit is a hot spot thought...You have Deitrick, his wife Damita, Fred Hammond, Cece, Bebe, Marvin, Vickie Winans, Marvin Sapp, Lexi (she was on Bobby Jones Gospel and Damita Haddon was singing back up for her, ha ha ha..Lexi lives in Pontiac around the corner from my aunt), Karen and Keke Sheard, Twinkie Terrell, Dorinda Cole, and some other people from the D. It's live man!!! Some people say New York is hot, but I think John P. Kee is the only big name from there...ha ha ha!!! But to bad I'm moving to Dallas!!!

There is so much great talent across this country! Chicago, L.A., New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Charlotte (and other parts of NC), And now Houston is really coming up on the scene (as well as other parts of TX), and many other places..

However that being said, I believe NO OTHER CITY or metro area has the rich concentration of musical talent and gospel legacy that DETROIT has!! Detroit gospel artists include:

The Clark Sisters (Twinkie, Dorinda, Karen, and Jacky)
The Winans family
Deitrick and Damita Haddon
Vanessa Bell Armstrong
J Moss
Kiki Sheard
Evelyn Turrentine-Agee
Fred Hammond
Commissioned
Witness
Lexi
Ramiyah
Vickie Winans
Rizen (from Saginaw, MI)
Marvin Sapp (from Grand Rapids, MI)
and many others!! (I'm just naming them off the top of my head) :D

And that's not even to mention the rich history that Detroit has. The late great innovators in gospel such as Thomas Whitfield and James Moore, and the queen herself, Dr. Mattie Moss Clark. Also Bill Moss (Dr. Clark's brother), Donald Vails and the Choraleers, Tessie Hill, and many others.

The Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA) was born in Detroit, the Gospel Music hall of fame, and the community there in general is VERY supportive of gospel.

Some other currently popular gospel artists learned the ropes while they lived in Detroit, including Donnie McClurkin, and Byron Cage! And many other gospel artists have traveled to Detroit to record albums, work with Detroit producers, and hold release parties.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. There is just so much that goes on in Detroit musically. This just goes to show you that Detroit, hands down is and always will be the GOSPEL MUSIC CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!!!

Yeah Detroit got something for you. If I've BEEN excited about this area despite the violence, then moved here in October of the 2k 2 and present, then I know that's right !! The pioneers are still active like Herman Harris, Rudy, Earl Wright Jr., Carol Cole, Twinkie, Greg Troy, Dre' Woods, Greg Pearson, Dave Louis, Herber Pickard ( he's down now I heard.)

Then I had the nerve to meet the younger current crew Curtis Pearson, Dave Berry, Tony Lucas, after that I found out about Michael Fletcher, Brian Watkins, Chris Troy, Echo sisters ( COGIC > where are they ???)Reynolds, Sam Cook, Bam, Dexter Smith, Joey Britten, Tolan Morgan, etc.

Detroit also has a reading-like-water crew that you may want to hear about one day. I'll share it when approached about it...

... by the way, let's go on back to Alfred Bolden and his own organ phono album which showed back THEN he was the best in the gospel world before M L King said "free at last, free at last, Thank God for the eighth notes, I'm free @ last!! "

Last but not Least, folks can't ever forget about Thomas Anthony Whitfield from Brand new, to I'm Satisfied. ( I met his sister by the way, who has been depressed since his death. Pray for her please ) WHitfield took Bolden to another level, along with Pickard and Harris. If websites were out in the late 70s, our old schools would be typing about them also, instead of driving to spread the news

I think that you have to also include Larry Nix and Alvin Wattles as some of the best organists in the Detroit area.

That's coo, 8) I'll just introduce you to some of them.  Sam Cook played with T. Whitfield (keys) on "the best of T. Whitfield" album(even though the credits didn't mention his name  :)  ).  Curtis Pearson currently plays for the T. Whitfield Company.  Larry Nix and maybe Tony Lucas played on Chris Jones and Word of Praise's album.  Dave Berry played on Rev. James Moore's and Michael Fletcher Chorale albums.  Tony Lucas and Curtis Pearson played on Wanda Nero Butler's albums.  I believe that the Alvin Waddles (M.O.M @ Hope U.M.C.) is the same guy who plays for the Alvin Waddles jazz trio, who's been all over Detroit newspapers.  But if not, his music staff includes Carole Cole (who taught Twinkie) and Carolyn Tribune-Moss (who played "Let Everything That Have Breath" on "Twinkie Clark Presents the FAMU Mass").  You can hear them at www.hopeumc.org, and everyone else you can find at www.amazon.com or www.fye.com.  None of these references gives these musicians enough justice either, so you all would have to come here to find out.
