SHOUTIN' MUSIC: FACT OR FICTION?
« on: July 18, 2005, 11:39:33 PM »
everywhere I go someone is doing shout music   Not trying to knock it, but something that used to be an art form and expression of praise, has turned into an all out shed track   there is absolutely no annointing in it whatsoever anymore! should'nt there be a reason to "SHOUT" anymore when doing "SHOUT" music.  The last time I played shout music was at this church in OKC "that shall remain nameless" :?  The MD told us to break out in a "shout" in the beginning of praise and worship....... 8O  8O  8O .....that's exactly how the audience of about 3 to 4 hundred looked at us... 8O  After we got done basically showing the audience that we could "play real fast" the only one shoutin was the MD about how cool it was! Iwas at guitar center the other day, and some punk rock drummer was mocking and making fun of shout music

I love it a lot :D , I just wish the annointing was in it like it used to be

The key is that one must know how to present a shout. You have to be sensative to the service to get their IMO....Sunday during the announcements, they mentioned that Mens' day was apporaching. the Key board player and I did a basic play around shout for about 15 seconds and stopped .... then all of a sudden the spirit hit us and every one lost their minds.... then we played the shout for about 20 minutes....it was off the chain!!!!!

Hey,

I'm all for shout music when the spirit is moving and the time is right (and I praise God for those churches who do shout)... but I agree that a lot of churches simply do "play fast." I love hearing chops and new runs and themes. I heard these guys from CT at a youth service break into a shout... then they threw in the theme from the Flintstones!!! My thing is, was the Holy Spirit involved. I think that we should be prayerful about music and be prayerful AS WE PLAY.

Think about this... if when we play, ppl's first reaction is awe at what they hear (rather than a quickening form the Holy Spirit), Satan is happy. What happened to music as warfare.... shouting used to be a weapon against the enemy.

Maybe musicians are excited because Hezekiah Walker's shout has finally played out and there's some new stuff to play (LOL). Just playing. But on the real... I agree with whomever said that the shout has become a glorified chops showcase. A few classic signs to look for that suggest that the band should simmer down now is if everybody is standing and just looking around or, worst, if there's nobody standing or looking around. I think there should be a university for gospel musicians because it's so much more than just playing notes or rhythms you got to HAVE the Spirit to be sensitive to the Spirit.
My goal as a musician is to be better than myself.

Yeah, it's called  University of Fasting, Praying and Studying the Word of God.  When you enroll to this, you get closer to him and the Holy Spirit takes over your talent and guides your every note on the drums, Keys, Bass, Guitar or whatever.  Trust me, the results are guaranteed 100%. :D

Hey... I'm taking summer classes there!  And the semesters just run back to back  I'm totally with everything that was said so far.

I'm not going to pretend that I've never learned some new stuff from hot shout music. Thank God that the churches I play for shout when the Spirit moves. When everybody gets "happy" at the same time, we know that it's time to go.

But I disagree w/ the "it's shout time" churches. I believe that there may be sundays when we're not meant to shout. Maybe the Spirit is calling for worship, mass prayer, etc. I wonder what is happening in the spiritual realm when we try to force God into the room... :?:

I just did some research on the University of Fasting, Praying, and Studying the Word of God and found out the cost for tuition is a broken spirit and a contrite heart. I have to let everyone know about this absolute bargain. ENROLL TODAY!!!! LOL

I agree with DW MANIAC it has turned in to a Display of chops in most churches,Sometimes I've seen the Shout Break thrown in when its not been requested(by the HOLY SPIRIT).In my experience the Praises being sent up beckons the PraiseBreak/Dance/Shout,But lately its not been so,I played as a guest Musician at a Church and the Music Director Wanted to bring in a Praise Break(aka)Shour Chorus at a time that I thought was inappropriate,It was just a chop display that lasted about 3 mintues before the Pastor Gave him the signal to bring it to an end,No one was shouting they were just looking at the Musicians "BangOut".As far as the Punk Drummer its the same basic groove Homey only GospelDrummer add inflections and varations  to  the Groove so it was not mocking. As far as the Speed I've seen Churches that play the Praise Break Fast and the People dancing and Praising fast,So the speed is a preference thing,I agree with J-FUNKY we Muscians need to FAsT and PRAY.The Musician at my church workout the different Breaks and shouts that we can do,Just as a point of reference.

our church doesn't shout often. maybe once every few years, but we get close. and when we do it goes for awhile. im talking like 40 minutes to an hour.

i was told a story of how Chris Coleman had to relive our bass player and someone else had to get on drums, then that person had to be relieved on drums.
