Some vids with my 8-string
« on: July 09, 2005, 01:31:45 PM »
Here are a couple small videos with my 8-string.

This one is the Hearbreak Hotel bass line that is used as a fill in a lot of songs.

In this one I'm playing along with the Fred Hammond's song "Your Love Is", from his latest cd. You can hear me pick up a couple new fill too.

....I'll post some more later.

Hey, B3 let's see you attack the upper register with that thing.
I don't play bass, my bass plays me.

I down-tuned the high C and F strings to B and E, like a normal guitar. I don't know what type of strings they are though. The only ones that I was able to find were Conklin brand strings, at http://www.conklinguitars.com/ . For a standard stainless steel set it'd cost about 60 dollars, for an S.I.T. set it'd be about 100.  8O

I'm practicing chords on it now, but I'm not even marginally good at it, so I didn't record anything. I'll do one and show my shame though.    I have a lot of practice ahead on this thing, but I'm excited about it. I like playing this one better than the 5 string. It sounds better and it's a little easier to play....It doesn't take much to get a good sound out of it. I can play it very lightly.

The only downside I've found so far is that it doesn't have one of those snap-lock panel for the battery compartment, so I have to unscrew the back panel to get to it...but that's minor.

I tried tapping Moonlight Sonata, but I was really shaky at it. I haven't really tried any tapping until about a month ago, so I don't even know if I'm using my fingers right yet. I'll have to buy some videos on it. I that that within the year, I'll be able to do it a little of that and chording, as my fingers get stronger and become more used to the bass. I don't think I'll shame myself that much with putting me tapping on a video yet!
 8O

I saw that Galveston 8 string on Ebay for around $569. Is it much cheaper in Korea where they are made? In US dollars of course. I want one, but I don't like buying anything I haven't played. But NOONE in my area has anything near an 8 string. I can hardly find 6's, and to locate a good selection I'd have to drive over 150 miles.

Yea. I bought this one from Ebay, from a dude named Fred. It took a little over a week for it to get here.

I haven't seen any here in Korea, and I've been to the major music supply store here.

I know how you feel about not buying one that you haven't played though. I was a little disappointed when I got my Peavey, because the frets were sticking out, but labor is cheap here, so I was able to get it fixed the way I wanted cheaply.

Nope. It's not intimidating at all!...and unless my shoulders are really strong and I don't know it, it's not heavy either. It's only 12lbs. I don't have a problem playing it a whole service.

Conklin makes a great seven string groove tools.  There Bill Dickens signiture model is an amazingly built bass.   I want to go that route if I can ever get the cash.
