Cymbal Breakage

I have been playing Zildjian Cymbals for a while.  I have had some cymbals break that concern me.  A lot of the cymbals I have purchased have been used, but appeared to be in good shape.  However, I know with the intense playing a gospel drummer goes through it can where on your cymbals.

I have gone through a couple of Zildjian A Custom 16" and 3 Zildjian Oriental Chinas 16".  As I embark on the purchase of two replacements, I do know that I am no longer going to buy used.  I will purchase new ones with the warranty.

My questions to you gospel drummers is what brand and type of cymbals do you use for huge crashes that can endure the punishment?  I'm interested in 16" crashes and chinas.  I am open to other brands besides Zildjian.  One cymbal I have my eye on is that Sabian 17" HHX Evolution O-Zone Crash.

I use Zildjian A Custom 15' and I havent had any problems with it..We
also have an 18' old school Zildjian.No problems with it either..maybe
you're laying into them way too hard..I use Zildjian Dip 7A sticks..

If you gonna get new cymbals,I recommend A custom 15'and 17'..or
A custom 16'and 18'..just the keep a balance..

I currently use an assortment but my main set is a sabian 16'' metal crash aax, 16'' sabian medium crash aa series,14 zildjian k , and a 16'' wuhan crash. these cymbals have endured some hard hittin from other drummers who have played on my stuff. also, make sure your cymbal stands have sleeves that cover the metal rod on which your cymbals rest. this can help prevent some breakage. also, angle your cymbals in a way that u are comfortable with but wont cause u to over work. hope this helps. peace

In our church we use 16" & 14" Sabians and 17" Zildjian.  Our cymbals crack all the time.  We replace them at least once a year.  It's not normal.  It has to do with the way that you hit the cymbals.  You must use a sweeping motion instead of a 90 degree angle (in reference to the ground) hit. I tried to to explain that to my drummers but it's hard to break an old habit. Good luck  :wink:

I PERSONALLY LOVE THE SOUND OF A CYMBAL THAT HAS BEEN MELLOWED OUT BY A FEW THOUSAND HITS. BE SURE TO ALWAYS CHECK A USED CYMBAL FOR ANY CRACKS NO MATTER HOW SMALL BEFORE YOU BUY IT!!!! THEY DON'T MAKE CYMBALS LIKE THEY USED TO...

The sabian aaxplosion and hhxplosion are super durable. wuhan chinas are nice too.

I AM ENDORSED BY SABIAN,I USE THE HHX EVOLUTION SERIES,THEY SOUND PRETTY GOOD, I DO HOWEVER USE A 12 " WU-HUN CHINA AND A K CUSTOM 20 " RIDE,SHHHHSSSSSS DONT TELL SABIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND I AM 5'10 250 AND BENCH  CLOSE TO 500LBS,AND I PLAY HARD AND HAVE YET TO BREAK A CYMBOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a sabian aa 16" thin crash and a sabian aax 16" studio crash. I bought both of them used. I have completly corrupted my crashes. My aa crash has gone from having multiple cracks to missing chunks of metal from it but my aax studio crash was in worse condition than the aa when I bought them and it has held up better; it has a small crack but that's it, and considering the way I hit my crashes the aax should look as worse as the aa. Next time I'm going with aax and hhx.
