My guy who does the production at church has it... he uses it on a Mac G4. But he really hates the mac because it freezes up. But in what I've done on it and stuff he's produced it is really good. I have a PC so I use Cakewalk SONAR. But I really like Pro Tools.

I have and use Pro Tools "plug-ins for day". I think it is a really off the chain software, but it along with other softwares I have are like bottom-less pitts because there is always upgrades a year later or even before. I recently  purchased the Adobe Video Collection Professional 1.5 version and really enjoy that for its price.

Anyhow here is a link for anyone who may want to tryout a free down-load of Pro Tools........... Let me know what yaw think

New Windows XP Systems Built for Pro Tools

Digidesign has collaborated with Terra Digital Audio to design and fully qualify a line of Windows XP–based computers for Pro Tools® systems. Digidesign and Terra are offering rack-mount and desktop computers built for Pro Tools|HD® systems, plus both desktop and laptop computers for Pro Tools LE™ systems.

Until now, only workstation-class computers were fully qualified for use with Pro Tools|HD systems on Windows XP. Terra’s initial products are the first desktop-class Windows-based computers to be fully qualified by Digidesign for Pro Tools|HD. And because the Terra computers are designed specifically for Pro Tools systems, they offer Digidesign customers a powerful, reliable “out of the box” experience — at a more affordable price.

Terra computers will be available through Digidesign dealers and directly through Terra Digital Audio. For more information about Terra Digital Audio systems, visit http://www.terradigitalaudio.com/index.htm.

Here it is...................

God Bless You,
jayzee

In my humble country boy opinion, I don't see what the big deal with Pro-Tools is.

1. Pro-Tools for the most part only works with Digidesign's audio interfaces (i.e. 001, 001, MBOX, etc) MOTU makes interfaces with better preamps and conversion quality for a much cheaper price (i.e. 828, 896, 192, etc).

2. Pro-Tools has horrible MIDI. Even if you're a PC guy, any other software like SONAR, Cubase or NUENDO can kill Pro-Tools' midi.

3. Regular ol' tracking seems so tedious in Pro-Tools. I guess I say this because I got used to working in DP where the majority of your tracking/editing tools are available right on the mouse. Maybe if I knew my commands in Pro-Tools I might change my opinion on this one.

4. Unless you have the $$$$ to buy a complete Pro-Tools HD3 system with the nice PCI cards, its better to go with another program. You'll get more for your dollar.

Here's something to keep in mind. When you are doing Pro studio work, you have to remember that Pro-tools is the studio standard. Especially if you get into music videos and movie scores. It works seemlessly with Avid which also is the studio standard for video / cinema.
For home studio, it doesn'treally matter, but if you want to take it to the next level and you have to start thinking about budgets, using studio standards help a lot.

That is not necessarily true.  While many studios have a pro-tools system available, most of them still use two-inch tape machines for tracking.  Furthermore, most big studio arrangers who work with midi and virtual instruments use some other software such as digital performer or logic because pro-tools has the sorriest midi ever created.

As far as pro-tools being necessary because it is the standard, that is basically a non-issue due to transferable OMF files.  Also, most Pro-tools HD systems used in the big studios come with a plug-in called "digitranslator" which will read and open any session created in other tracking programs.

So you would say that Sonar 5 Producer Edition using a MOTU interface is considered a "professional  alternative" to Pro Tools if using a PC?

Brother, I don't know where you have been recording, but I haven't seen 2" in a studio in at least 5 years. And although I love Mark of the Unicorn, and have been using Cubase since it first came out,  Pro Tools is the industry standard like it or not.

All the big studios (Sunset, Ocean Way, Signature Sound, Mad Hatter etc.) here on the west coast still track on 2 inch tape.

I'm sure this is also the case in the New York, Nashville and Miami studios....not to mention the studios in Europe.

Like I said earlier, the true "standard" for software based recording are transferrable OMF files....

I understand what you are saying about Pro-Tools, but increasingly I'm finding more and more people using other software...for the reasons I mentioned earlier and because of Digidesign's below average tech support.

I use Protools and it is a good software, but there are so many other
software companys that are better like, Steinberg Nuendo 3.0 which
sounds a whole lot better then Protools and even Logic Audio and
Cubase SX 3.0 are very good software it depends on what you are using
it for. You are really not getting the fullness of protools until you get to the
HD TDM version which starts off at about $10,000 for basic system.

BUT MOST OF THE BIG STUDIOS I HAVE BEEN TO HAVE TWO DIFFERENT STATIONS.

THEY HAVE THE MAIN RECORDING AND MIXING STATION. AND ALSO BEHIND THE MAIN STATION THEY HAVE A SUB-STATION. THIS IS WHERE ALL OF THE MIDI AND VST INSTRUMENTS COME INTO PLAY.

USUALLY WHEN PEOPLE BRING MUSICAINS IN THE STUDIO THAT PLAY KEYS. THE MUSICAINS ALLREADY HAVE ACUSTOMED THERESELVES TO A CERTAINT  ENGINE LIKE,SONAR,FRUITYLOOPS,ANVIL,ECT.

SO, THE STUDIOS HAVE DONE IS THEY INCORIRATE A WHOLE OTHER SYSTEM INTO THE STUDIO.

THEY HAVE ALL OF THE KEYBOARDS, MIDI CONTROLLER, AND A LAPTOP BACK THERE.

AND ON THE LAPTOP THEY HAVE EVERY PROGRAM ENGINE LOADED ON THE LAPTOP.

THIS WAY THE ENGINEER IS COMFORTABLE WITH THE ENGINE HE KNOWS HOW TO RUN. AND THE MUSICIAN IS COMFORTABLE WITH THE ENGINE HE KNOW HOW TO RUN.

I'm new to this site, and I'm not sure how far the discussion on Pro Tools has gone. I've been using PT for some time now for my productions, and it will be interesting to chat with other PT users. I took  production courses with Berkleemusic, and am familiar with other production packages as well.
