8O Wow, thanks guys. One more question though. I play at a pretty large church and I need to amplify over a good distance as well as other instruments. Would a 25 or 30 watt amp do this? It's an Apostolic church and we really get into our praise and worship sevices.

Hey! I go to an apostolic church too! Great to meet someone like you. I own a Line 6 vetta II modeling amp and it does great! The problem is this is NOT an inexpensive amp...it cost me about $2,000 with the FVB longboard.  But I could reccomend a line 6 flextone, as they are a great amp with plenty of power. I used to have a flex 3 XL before I got my vetta II. If you want an even cheaper option....check out the line 6 spider amps.

I guess the reason I prefer line 6 is because they are the company that started the "modeling" craze by comming out with the AX2....the very first modeling amp of it's kind. The rest of the companies like vox followed later on and have made some improvements, but to me nothing unless it is the real tube amp it is modeling, compares to my vetta II.

I got a Peavey Transtube 212 EFX,it'a a 100 watt amp and is a solid state. It also has nine different effects built in like chorus,phaser,wah,tremolo.etc. and a footswitch. It is loud enough to be heard. It also features different settings for the style of music you would like to play. I do plan on getting a tube amp later, but this is a good one for the price, for $500,I couldn't pass it up.

Is the Peavey just as good, better or worse than the Crate FXT line? I know the Crate is a litter cheaper but is it worth it?

I think the Peavey is better than the Crate, but that's just my opinion. You can also get the 40 watt version of the peavey which will be cheaper, the Peavey Transtube EFX 112. I haven't heard the Crate,I have played the older models without the effects and they were decent. How much do you plan to spend? That would give us an idea so we can match up the amp for the price.

I will probably spend anywhere from 3-400 dollars. This will be my first "real" amp ( I have a 10watt practice amp) and I want it to be something that I will not want to replace in another year or so.

You could probly get a good used Peavey Classic 30 for that price, good amp and tubes at that. If you want to get a solid state amp, there's nothing wrong with those either,I'd get a Fender Princeton 65,I think that's what they are, little under $300,and 65 watts, check it out. Or check what's available in your price range, ask the guitar techs, salesmen.Don't forget to look at the used amps.

I was also wondering about foot switches. Does it matter what brand you get. Do the brands have to match up or are they pretty much universal if you like the setup of another pedal, say crate, can I match it up with my fender amp? I'm talking about a standard pedal (click on/off).

Some pedals are junk. Cheap price pedals usually are a "get what you pay for" deal.
Overall Boss, Digitech, DOD and Ibanez make decent mid-priced pedals.
Some pedals...the boutique hand wired or modded ones...can cost more than a small tube amp. Are they worth it? Some say yes...some say no.

You can mix and match brands all day long.

Are there any effects that are a must when playing at church? Is there anything that, one I get better, just has to be decent sounding?

My "musts" are chorus and delay. A must if you're doing some serious Gospel is a wah wah.
A compressor is handy if you want to level out your sound a bit...a noise supressor is good if you're playing a Strat with single coil pickups.
