Can someone please explain how you derive alternate chords for common progressions like 251 736 514. Is there a certain formate you use, thanks for the help.

I have one question before going into explaination.. Do you understand or have seen minor, harmonic minor scales or other types of scales?? and do you understand when I say I ii iii IV V7 vi vii flat5 in a scale???
