need help forming runs and riffs
« on: December 23, 2003, 06:17:53 PM »
can someone describe to me how to form runs and fill-ins between chords. do you base them on scales depending on the chord you're playing?, progressing to?, the key you're in?, or all the above. You can also list some of the runs you may use. I'd be gratefull for any help.

I'm not an expert on this, but I was told by an "expert" that you can just arpeggiate your chords--hmm, is that a word? (I think so.) Anyway, I guess using this you can take a chord that you'd normally play and just play the notes separately.

Inbetween chords, you can Arpeggiate the chord tones and extensions of the chord tones individually like B3 said.  You can also play the Extensions to the chords (7th, 9ths, 13ths,  etc. ), Inversions of the chords, Substitutions for the chords or even just play the melody.  You can also do something with the rythmn.

Look through the old posts in the THEORY, PIANO and LOUNGE forums (and also at http://groups.google.com) for the words that I bolded (is that a word ;-) ) and you'll find a bunch of ideas.  Play around with some of those and let your ear be your guide.

One thing that I have been experimenting with is kinda like playing the melody of the song the only difference is that I try to do the add libbing (unless someone is already doing the add libbing) part rather then the actual song. For example if I was playing "I'm a soldier in the Army of the Lord" in the breaks I would almost try to make the piano say "SOLDIER IN THE ARMY" I do it farely quick and break it up sometimes or blend it together(practice, practice, practice). Another thing I've actually done is tooken chord changes from other songs and applied them to other songs where i could fit them in and that has worked really nice me for also. Kinda like when a Preacher is preaching and he throws out a bit of a song that would fit right into his preaching. Hope I've helped you out .

GOD BLESS

You can transpose it to fit the key your playing in!

This is in the key of F
F - Ab - A - C - D - F

Play it going straight up the piano in this order.
When you learn it you can do them in octaves.

Stay in touch with me to let me know how it turns out! O.K. :)
Good Luck!
