the first 4 strings from low to high are the same tuning method as a bass as guitar!

hit a low e on the piano to get the low e on the bass...then the 5th fret of the low E will sound like the A string

the 5th fret of the A string will sound like the D string...

the 5th fret of the D string will sound like the G string!

boom! you're tuned! :P

mikegee,
you need to add a regiment of ear training into your practice time. if your having trouble tuning by ear, i can only imagine the trouble you run into trying to play a song you hear on a cd/radio... same principle..

there are many methods you can use to tune your instrument, i will recommend this one..

fun stuff, untune your bass and (with it unplugged) hit the E, B, F# what ever that telephone like string is on your bass, place your lower earlobe (head, chin, cheek, whatever) against the horn of the body, you will feel the hum of your bass.. similar to tuning forks.. you should never have problems tuning once you train your ear, also it is very affective to train your voice, and use this tuning method also.

using alternate tuning you can turn a 4 string bass into a nightmare mass confusion but fun playing bass, with extended bass tunings you can really get crazy.. Vic Wooten live does alternate tunings while hes playing a song and comes right back into tune, its absolutely amazing.!!
spirit check, testing 1,2,3...testing, testing. a scripture a day will keep the enemy at bay. :0)

struggling does not mean you don't seceed. I find it harder to tune by ear verses playing a song by ear. playing by ear I just keep plucking until i hear a note that matches the recording, over all it can only be 12 notes. tuning by ear one string has to be right in order for it to wokr. i use the A and D to tune them via a song. i've memerized the pitches of those notes.

if they arn't then nothing is. you, in my oppinion are more then likely right. but i will trust a tuner more then my ears and further more i will trust an electronic tuner before mans ears. i have never had a mis-hap with my tuner

throw you tuners in the trash !!

ex: one tuners batterys low, the other musician (guitar players) tuner battery is great.. hes dialed in you're not, Tune TOGETHER !!

440 tuning is meant as natural tuning, you can achieve natural tuning with your EAR..

rant and roll..

oh.... we do tune up before we start to make sure we are tuned together which is normally after we tuned with our own tuners and I've never heard a difference
