i wounder why they just didn't make a 6 string bass to start with?? i guess they were just trying to memick the acoustic upright, one would think when Fender went electric he would have made a sixer.. you know you can play anysong on one string.. case closed..
spirit check, testing 1,2,3...testing, testing. a scripture a day will keep the enemy at bay. :0)

It would've been blasphemy to have a bass with 6 strings. At that time, a bass had 4 strings. A guitar had six. I think that was reason, and we still have a lot of people that feel this way today.

Believe it or not Fender was the first company to make a six string bass. This was back in the 60's and I think they took it off the market a few years later. However, it was recorded by some of the top artists of the day like the Beatles. Check out this link.

Duh. They even mentioned that bass in the article I posted. I stand corrected. I would still consider the instrument I was referring to as a bass since the E string is the same pitch as a regular bass but it's also referred to as a baritone guitar as well. :D

It is the same pitch, but is it the same octave?

I started with the guitar I am playing now.  A Hohner "Steinberger".

When I moved to ATL and tried to get with bands to play with, one of the criticisms was that I played the "Steinberger", and I also had a problem finding the double ball end strings (though I haven't changed a string on the thing since 1989ish).

So I got a 5 string, not because I wanted a 5 string, but because it was the only red one in my price range.  I got used to the low B and almost never played the G string even on the 4 string.

So I pulled out my "Steinberger", because I love it and it is my first, and play it tuned B-E-A-D.

Many musicians find the extended range helps them ghost or fake through a song pattern more easily, think about it with a four string you do more work!

Which would you rather have a rolls, or a pinto?.

I play a six string custom with built in EQ, six peice body, five piece neck lined fretless, cost a mint but this Roscoe can bounce baby check out thier site, Oh did I mention I'm a lefty!
