What does the word POCKET mean to you?
« on: October 25, 2005, 02:58:18 PM »
What's good family!! We are all brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus! I'm new on this site. I have been reading some of the info that has been sent about different topics and they are all good responses. I just want to know and get and idea of what pocket means to yall. To me it is establishing the groove at the begening of the song. Having a band locked and loaded at the begining of the song is very important. It's the drummers job to keep TIME!! and it seem some of our yonger drummers loose sight of this very thing. Yeah they have the foot down, but the timing is way off. I teach my yonger drummers about timing, because what good is it to have a foot but you can't put what your playing in time. To sum it all up pocket to me is making the music feel good. if your playing with a band it's not a drum solo, but music let's not loose sight of that. Making music should always out weight your biggest trick or chop.

Be blessed!!

I'm new to this site as well.  It's cool here, but I feel you.  It's so important to hold the groove down.  We have to remember there are other members of the band who depend on your pocket.  When there is spaces give it a nice fill that works well with the music, and then come back to that pocket.

Welcome to you and Seven.  Looks like you're from Tampa.  We have family in Tampa. It looks like LGM is going to be having a small family reunion coming your way from Georgia and Central Florida as we will be at the Guitar Center Drum Off State Finals.  My brothers Da Drumma and Sugarbear recide there so be on the look out.  Hopefully we can get "Third" to join the growing Fam.  Anyway, Welcome.

Literally, the first thing that comes to mind is that "pocket" has got to be the single most discussed topic on this entire website. The second thing that comes to mind is the word "groove". The third thing that comes to mind is the phrase "money maker".

Yo emazin, what up? Nice to see that you're so close to home man. I betcha that I've ran into you once or twice. It usually works out that way. Seeing that you're a hometown homie maybe we could get acquainted and I'm sure my boy Da_Drumma would love to meet you as well. As JFunky said, it seems that there will be quite a few of us here at the Guitar Center state finals. Like I told the others, if you come I will enjoy the fellowship. Welcome to the forum. By the way, my definition of pocket is creating a security blanket for the rest of your band  and keeping both the audience and band mates' heads bobbin'. No extra stuff, just making that groove as wide as the Mississippi.
My goal as a musician is to be better than myself.

emazin, now that you're talking a little more i think i may know of you. is your name emil (don't know if i spelled it right). If you are emil, than I must say man you already big here in tampa. By the way, whatever happened to you. When I first started going to Without Walls you were playing there ( and might I say one of the better drummers). i started to miss hearing you man. I ran into Chris last week and he was tellin me that you had just covered a gig for him. I've been tryin to follow you a lil' bit more but no one seems to have any info, nice to see that you're here in the "computer" flesh. I've been tryin to do the Without Walls thing for a year now, but it's kinda hard to break out there if you feel me. I'll shut it down here but, if you get a chance, pm broooooother.
