studying jazz
« on: April 17, 2006, 03:15:42 PM »
I read the info that was posted and the questions that were answerd about studying jazz for the phat chords..but as a beginner is it better to have the foundation and theory of the playing the keyboard first and then jazz-up the chords?

Its MUCH better to have a good strong foundation than to just start out playing "phat" chords.

thanks again..i guess you are right..]
in r&b, jazz, and some gospel...what are the the chords that are being played the most? is it major and minor 9th's? i know that question could vary but i hear alot of powerful chords in songs and they don't sound like your typical major and minor triads   ;D

Patience is key follow procedures and in time it will all come together.  Foundation affects every level so do as necessary where you are and appreciate it later.

In jazz, gospel, and now neo soul...they use extended chords built off of the 7th (9ths, 10ths, 11th, 13ths).  But the trick is also about the chord substitions that give it that phat sound.

No there is no guessing about it. Take it from a old head in this thing "SIMPLICITY SELLS" in other words, learn your basics FIRST, then gradually implement!  God Bless, Bishop Cole
