WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE?
« on: October 31, 2005, 12:49:12 PM »
Hello guys!

There was times i really did prayed to God that i would like him to give me breakthrougs in my keyboard knowlege.
At the moment i have a very big problem, which is: i now have so many source of information and less time to practise.

From books,Tapes,DVDs,internet etc I have been able to get alot of stuffs that can really be of great help in improving my skills such as improvisations with scales,triads,7th etc and also passing chords, licks and riffs.
The big problem i am having now is that ,I see myself still looking for more stuff eventhough i have not been able to master what i have already.

As regards my time.I am not single and my wife is not a christian.
I have a very stressful Job

on one hand I donīt know where to start to do my practise(due to the so much stuff i have at the moment and on the other hand my wife and my job is not creating enough time for me to practise (she doesnīt  support my playing for the church)
Can somebody advice me on what to do?
Thanks in advance and God bless!

Your solution is in your problem. You've already stated that you have an abundance of material and you haven't even mastered it yet. So....

Why do you go out and get more?

Work with what you have. You've got to become disciplined concerning your improvement on piano.

As for the other stuff, God will make a way. Explain your desires to your wife. She doesn't have to understand, just explain it to her. In addition, make sure you're making for her and your practice.

As far as the wife and job thing, I can't do nothing to help u there.

About the keyboard problem, there is no shortcuts to getting better on the keyboard.  You have to start from the bottom and build up.  You can't jump ahead w/out mastering what u already have.  I know what u mean by wanting to play better, but don't have a lot of time for practicing.  I've been there, and in some ways I am still there.  The thing is when u and adult and u married, u gotta take care of your responsibilites first.  Unfortunately, some other stuff have to take a back seat.  Just don't stop practicing though.  Whatever amount of time u have, even if it's only 10 minutes a day.  In 10 minutes u can run all your major scales and practice a few progressions in every key.  Every little bit helps.  Don't get discouraged, just keep pressing on even if u the only one in the world who supports what u are doing.  It comes a point in life when u gotta stand by yourself and depend on God to help u.
Real musicians play in every key!!!

10min ?

Hello!

Thanks for your contribution.I was thinking about what you just said: in 10min i can run my scales on all keys and make some progression.

When i am practising i cannot stop for example it is taking me maybe, more than an hour  just to practise the jazz chord scale progression(major7th,minor7th,mino7th,major7th,7th,minor7th,diminish,major7th)

because, i do it as block chord on all keys(chromatically) then also broken chord ,then as apreggio and then in a circle of fouth(block, broken and appreggio) and I also make inversion of them(normal inversions and octave inversion ie to repeat it in each octave .At th end i have to experiment it with some songs.

The problem is that when i start to practise onething I find it hard to stay short time on the keyboard(say 10min) sometime my wife have to come and pull the the keyboard plug out (I am using headphone, since i wouldnīt like to disturb her)

There is something about my past  i would like to say.
I was play keyboard for a short time. then i could only make a 1 4 5 progression and some minor keys ,after a while  i backslided , i didnīt play keyboard for almost 4 year.So when i came back now , i saw the things have changed .I feel i have missed alot .hence my striving to catch up with what i have missed all the while.
I think i need disciple and a way to manage the little time i have to make the best out of it.maybe i have to set an alam clock so that i can know when to stop. becuase of this problem of not been able to manage my little time. i find myself not starting practise at all when i know i donīt have enough time.

maybe somebody can advice me more.
thanks in advance.

Check out T Block chord post. This should help you to get started. Then just practice with the material you already have.

Your # 1 priority is spending time with God in worship, prayer, and study of the word. In addition to your practicing and music ministry responsibilities, you want to make sure you are spending time with the Lord first. As you pray, God will not only change and touch your wifes heart but he will begin to touch your heart as well and give you the wisdom and direction for your life. During that time of prayer, he will give you the wisdom and the strength to love your wife, be faithful on your job, and find time to practice and walk in your ministry. In Phillipians, it is called the peace of God that will surpass all understanding. The Word of God says that if you delight yourself in the Lord, that he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 1 is also good scripture to read. I hope this will help. I am preaching to myself.

I know what u r going thru. I stopped playing for around 4 years as well and now when I sit and play I find myself there for 2 tp 3 hours. I am not married though and only have to make time for God and myself.

I went on an information overload as well and I had to force my self to slow down and practice what I knew untill I had it down to almost perfect.

Practice your chords and progressions and play some music that has those chords in them. Set a goal of how long u will play and stick to it. Do not go overboard. Even 30 minutes a day will have u playing well and advancing in no time.

I also practice my music in my head at work, this is good if u have idle time to think and try squeezing some word in on your breaks.

I will be praying 4 u as well as my Sunday School class.

hello psychopianoman!
Thanks for your advice.

At the moment i am having a big problem with my choir leader.

She doesnīt play any intrument and yet she wants to tell me with her mouth what she want me to play(Just making sound from her mouth)

Most time i donīt even get CDs for song .

Just this sunday she was trying to embarasse me with our  first song Since i wasnīt in the practise, this song was new to me she was starting with this song and wanted me to play an intro for the song in present of the whole church.

I was remaining on the "I" of the chord progression and try to make some fancy moves so that she can come in at any time.

Could you believe that when i song was on and i tried to accompany her .At the time i was safe with the progression she quickly change the song I was very  angry.
But thank God for God.
The second and other songs were great .
She always take her emotions in to ministration and this is not good.

few seconds Before ministration we had misunderstanding for me it was something very small .
she said she gave me 4 sheets of papiers with lyrics from our sunday song(this was on friday, since i could not go to practise b/c of my work) from our music but i only came to church with 3 for me i taught it was 3 and then she gave me the missing sheet few seconds before we start and started with a song from this sheet.
I could say if this was delibate.
But thank God that it ended well.

As a beginner, I've found my biggest problem to be trying to learn too much too fast.  I want so much to be good, that I try to learn 50 different techniques, riffs, progressions, etc. at the same time.  But if you try to learn everything, you learn nothing.  I've learned to just take my time.  Trying to make sure I have a firm foundation before I jump ahead.

Thanks for your advice.
Learning so much at once can even make ones playing rough(not mature)
Because there is always the temptation to wanting to apply everything on one song and this i think is not maturity.
