So Bassplayers......Why the bass?
« on: November 14, 2005, 03:59:09 PM »
Tell me why you chose the bass, were you forced to learn, were you always facinated, etc.

I tell you what I learned strickly because of my uncle, he was the coolest person in my little world me being all off 11 years old and I wanted to be just like him. when he gave me his bass I played for a few weeks but got bored and frustrated. Then when I was about 16 when I started really to walk with the Lord, He put this fire in me I had to get out, so I grabbed my bass and everything seemed to move from there. Peace!

My reason for bass is a lil simular as Brad. My father played bass for years before I was born. I idealize my father I wanted to be just like him, now I want to be just like him but having GOD in my heart (I have managed to do both)  when I bought my father a bass for fathers day 3 years ago (he never owned one while I was born) I heard him play that cheap Peavey Fury 4. I just had to get myself one so I did about 1 year after that. A fender Jazz deluxe which now is a Frankenstien.... I go it as a hobby now I'm serious about this bass thing. 4, 5 , 6 fretless 4 5 and 6 upright 4 and 5 string............... I won't stop until I'm a Christian Bass player. oh wait I am ok a Professional Christian Bass Player.

For most of my life, i've played an instrument or two.  It wasn't until Jr. High, while playing the different kinds of Clarinets, specifcally the bass clarinet, that I realized how much I loved that bass sound.  Years later, my now ex-husband decided to pick up playing bass again.  I suppose that was my prompt to play bass.    :)

My story is a little different...I came up on the drums in the COGIC church,  20 plus years (started when I was 6).  I played the drums on praise and worship team in VA after getting serious about God.  Then I came here to Japan and our drummer was the baddest cat I had ever heard.  Well while in Va, prepping to leave, we had this cat come in that was a drummer but just learning to fiddle the bass.  I started letting him play drums and I would be in the corner playing the root note to every change in the song in the corner(made the keyboardist a little irritated with me but who cares).  Anyway, once I got to Japan and realized, that my leaders at church were pretty sold on this guy being the best drummer on island, I went and picked me up a bass.  Once I learned the fret board it was over.  My and "the baddest drummer on isand" were holding down services with a drum and bass workshop.  Funny all the other musicians left the church and we were left.  I church was called the Church of Funk because that was all I knew how to play.  I funkafied everything.  Everything except for the worship songs, well not all of them anyway.  But I believe that the bass is the B3 OF TODAY'S CHURCH.  The Old B3 sounds nice but the Joshua generation is grooving to a differnt sound.  B3 ain't got that snap and pop that the bass brings to the table with the versatility to melt you heart of over slow grooves with melodic runs...eeew I get chills just thinking about it.  I can play keys too a little but I'll never play anything but the bass, too many things you can do with it.

See!

I know I have bass guitars on my icon, but.....

My username still has B3 in it!!!!

You're about to make me throw my organ bench at you! @ Spiritfingers....

The way you talked about the organ is almost blasphemy!

 8O  8O

Anyway, I started playing bass because God has given me the gift to play music, so it doesn't matter what instrument I play. As long as I'm playing for God, I can learn to play any instrument.....

....but like Spiritfingers, I only have the desire to learn about 10...ok...not like Spiritfingers....

I started on guitar when I was about 9, I learned some chords and played around with it and learned a lot of songs off the radio and that was about the extent of it. Then when I was about 12, I was out playing and heard this music comming from this guys basement, so me and the rest of the kids crowded up looking in his basement windo and that was acually the first time I saw someone play a bass up close. Me and some of the other boys had discussed starteing a band and I was supose to play guitar and on Christmas they were all getting their instruments... But after I saw this guy playing this bass I was hooked on the sound and it dawned on me that the bass is what was really the backbone behind many 70's songs that I was playing off the radio. So I asked the guy could we come in, he let us in and finaly I got around to asking him if I could hold the bass, he did and I was REALLY hooked then. So me and a few other boys decided to start a band and that Christmas is when I got my first bass. In my mind the bass is what gives a song it's depth and feeling, and if you hear a bass player that can stay tight in a groove, you will feel it no matter how simple the bass line is... Thats why I play the bass, there is something about locking in on a groove that I really enjoy.

My whole family is musical.  My parents used to travel with a C.O.G.I.C. choir.  My dad directs, sings and plays piano.  My sister sings and has sang backup for a few famous people.  She has been playing drums since she was 6 (now in her mid 20's) and she plays keys.  My brother was born singing.  He has sang with so many people I can't even name them all.  Check out his website http://www.jaimecrawford.com.  My uncle is a professional muscian.  My cousin plays bass, his brother has a record Label http://dcvibeentertainment.com/index.html.  There are others but I don't want to make this too long.  Needless to say I can't be left out.  I played Sax in Jr. High and moved to Bass after a year.  I only played for a semester but I didn't pick it back up until a year and a half ago.  I couldn't even imagine wanting to play another instrument.

I started out playing sax in the band, I was decent but I always hung out in the tuba section because I thought the bass sounded so kewl and I wondered how they made all there notes on just 3 valves. well I kept at it and in 1 year was state ranked. Continues through college and just didn't think about it again until I joined this church here in idaho. They needed a bass player and I figured since I could read music it would be so bad. Well I just love it. with Gods direction I will be ok, and just keep on playing.. One of these days my wife will realize how much I love to play and I might be able to get another guitar. Until then , I am gonna perfect this little old fender jazz 4.... ..

There was no Bass Player in the House... Our Church's Bass was just sitting there collecting dust.  I've always wanted to play an instrument, and I thought why not..

When I was younger, living in IN, our church would have gospel groups at the church and we would also go to a lot of gospel concerts.  I always like the bass players.  i just thought that bass sound was what "made" the song.  also my best friend used to learn bass from his father who played for a local gospel group and then he would try to teach me what he learned.  (a 10 yo teaching a 12 yo).  well, coming from an "economically challenged" family, i never owned my own bass and i eventually kinda gave up on trying to learn.  i still had the bass in my heart, in march of this year, after all these years have passed, i finally bought me a bass guitar with the sole intention of playing for my church, which is what i wanted to do all along.  I'm a newbie, but i'm learning.  anyway, that's my story and i'm sticking to it. LOL

I've always wanted to learn how to play bass in high school,I liked the thunder roar of a live bass. I was into heavy stuff back in the seventies, and I thought four strings, two less than a guitar,no chords, must be easy enough.I didn't learn how to play the guitar until I was 24,I was late starter.Fast forward twenty some years,I am now a pretty good blues based guitar player. I picked up the bass and started playing single notes, then learned the blues scale for bass. Now I can actually play the bass and love it. I play lead guitar at church when we have a bass player, and play bass when don't. I've also noted that most bassist like to stay in the background and let the frontmen and guitarist have the stage, notice I did say most bassist, there are exceptionals. This fits me to a T. If I had the choice of becoming a professional guitarist or bassist,I'd be the bass player!

bradleymoorer,

It being available an instrument, was only gravy.  I've always been facinated with Guitars (Lead, and Bass) since a young child, my unlce used to play, and I used to enjoy that.  I just never could afford an instrument, growing up.  I actually found a guitar at age 9 or 10 in a field.  But couldn't afford the strings or an amp.  :(  it ended up getting  lost in a move.  So I got heavy into sports.

I guess you can say its been a life-time coming.

I know that was long winded...but to answer your question consisely...

I love the Bass...

brah, That is awesome, I can't imagine anyone that even tried the bass not enjoy playing it. just because of what the bass can do for a song, just by changing the bassline you can completely change the feel of a song... I just started playing piano about a year ago, and in no way can it replace my baby, Peace!

I began playing bass when I was 13 years old. I never really knew about the instrument until a pastor at a local church came to visit my church. He was a phenomenal bass player and I was hypnotized by the sound for the whole service. After weeks of begging my mother for a bass, she finally broke down and bought me one. The sound of the instrument was just beautiful to me. After years of playing and practicing, I found myself able to express myself more on my instrument. That's been quite awhile ago and I'm still amazed at the level of expression that one can achieve through the electric bass.

My story is some what similar to a few of yall's stories. I was always fascinated with the sound the bass made. Even when I was a little kid (7 or 8) I knew the difference between the bass and a guitar. My daddy would always hum or kinda sing the bassline to songs. I think at one time he probably wanted to play the bass too. But anyway, there was this guy my daddy grew up with that played the bass at one of the churches we fellowshipped with. I remember trying to sit as close as I could to the musicians so that I could see him play. I was amazed sometimes at how he could make that thang sang! He's nearly fifty now, but he still holds it down with his 6 string Ken Smith. Seeing and hearing him really made me want to play. So, eventually I got a 4 string Fender Jazz. I have to admit that I've tried to put my bass down and stop playing several times. I would get frustrated and discouraged and just give up. But something inside me would not let me suppress the desire to play as much as I tried. I finally realized that it was God who gave me that passion and desire. Then, I realized that it's not just about playing an instrument. It's about praising! Me playing is my way of giving God praise and adoration. Now, nothing can stop me from taking the gift that God gave me and using it to His glory! For as long as God allows, I will pray, practice, and praise. Keep thumpin' and be blessed.
Be blessed and keep thumpin'.

I wanted to be a synthesizer player.  Not a piano player, not an organ player, not a hurdy-gurdy player, a synthesizer player.  I liked the idea of making sounds realistic and not, and I liked the idea of sequencing.  Unfortunately, I couldn't afford a good synth, forget about a sequencer for an analogue synth, and I eventually got a piano teacher, but I never did much because I wanted to perform not practice scales.

I was in college round then, and none of the bands wanted some Black guy playing synthesizer and organ.  They were all about the guitar, bass and drums, and because I deejayed dances, I think the perception was that I wasn't about rock music which wasn't true.

At the same time, I had a little multi-track recorder that I would compose songs on with my synth and drum machine, and I had been spending so much time trying to get a bass sound I was losing the flavor of the composition.  It was just easier to borrow a bass guitar and play what needed to be played.

Eventually, my friend Eugene and I decided we would try to do an electronic music project together with him playing guitar, and me doing everything else which turned into more or less a straight forward, traditional guitar, bass and drums Punk rock band.  We couldn't find any bass player who would play with us, so I borrowed another bass and had to learn how to play it.  We used to rehearse almost everyday.

Eventually, I bought my first bass (The Steinberger copy that I play now) a year later.
