Would you agree with me in saying that it seems like musicians/Ministers of Music have the most hateful and arrogant attitudes of most people within the church. I say that not to actually say that musicians/Ministers of Music have the worst attitudes, but it seems to me like tempers flare more easily with musicians and anyone within the music ministry of the church than any other area of the church. I recently presented a handout to our choirs on Christ-like character. I believe that we as choir members and musicians ought to be able to maintain Christ-like character, no matter what part of the church we are working in. If anyone wants a handout, give me your email address and I will send you one. What do you all think?

I haven't really seen this at my particluar church. We only have a drummer, a pianist, and me (Bass). We all are pretty mello. But I know how passionate artistic people are. So maybe it's not so much arrogance as it is the passion that we have as musicians, that comes off as hatefulness

I think it is sometime that we as musicians are put to a lot more mentally. We can get pushed to the edge and sometimes we fall over it. Being a MOM can be very stressful. As regular ppl may deal with stress every now and then, with musicians, it can be a daily constant. We have to search for music to teach, learn the music, make sure all the other musicians get the music, rehearse the musicians, teach the choir, recruit, satisfy the congregation, and satisfy the pastor. With all that you have battle attitudes from every angle, manage your schedule, and try to maintain a christian attitude (which is enough itself).

Wow :o that's crazy that you should bring this topic up, I have had this discussion with my mother on several occasions. For some reason It is a little more intense in the music department than in any other auxiliary and conflict occurs, uh I know what you mean about the attitudes and the arrogance cause I had to learn to deal with them all the time when I started learning how to play at one of my churches, and I agree with you in that aspect, cause I have encountered singers that don't want sing a certain song, and fellow musicians that act like they deaf!! but that stuff is not the problem, cause that's going to happen any where you go, but it's the way they handle it that determines if there is going to be conflict or not. My mother always tells me to say sweet just like I am cause the music ministry, and the people therein are always going to be cutting edge, that's just the way it is, and people will want to work with you and things can get accomplished when you have a seasoned perspective on things and you're not trying to throw you power and authority around. There is so much entailed in the music department, and that's why egos get so heavily involved, that's why I think the music ministry of church not only needs the rehearsals every week, but prayer on a sincere level concerning everyone in the music department, so it won't be like anyone is overlooked and no one gets the big head and all kinds of things that happen when there is not enough prayer and focus on God, but on the Gifts he has given us. The music ministry needs to be to the point to where God can have his way and His spirit moves freely and touches the Rest of the Congregation so that we can enter into worship and glorify his name his works and his wonders. With all that being said, you kinda get the idea of how important this part of the ministry is, that's why it is so tedious and is kinda a lot of work. It takes the ANOINTING YALL! :!:  :D  To successfully accomplish this and teamwork, then we throw away all the pride, attitudes, egos and arrogance, and try to get closer to God. uh think this is something we should take serious and be dedicated about. Things just might go easier this way and people's behavior might even change as well         So pray and stay humble,  8) dont get no attitude with folks 8)  8)  8)  8)  8) be cool yall love peace soul and the HolyGhost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D  :D  :D

Let me put my 2 cents worth in...

I think that a lot of times us musicians that are the main players in church, our gift HAS to work everytime we come in the building.  Most associate ministers come to church and they know they don't have to preach or minister, but I know that as soon as I hit the parking lot, it's on.  I have to be able to flow, know and glow, and if it's anything less, I'm looked at funny.  Musicians that are always playing know that we can't have a "bad" day even though we are human like everyone else.  So, I can agree that we are moody, and we can be down right mean sometimes, but I also know that for most of us SAVED musicians, (and we are a dying breed you know) It's not intentional, I try to work beyond my hurt and etc, and minister, because it's not about self anyway:)

I'ts not like this at my church, however I am aware of what you are referring to.  "Church Musician" is a big to do.  And in some hoods its like a posse or click group, and if you're not down, you're not cool (hahahaha). Its filled with a lot of competition and drive, so some are very arrogant and stuck up (with in self).  Therefore, God is not really being glorified at all.  So that falls on the spiritual growth of that musician.

I get what you are saying man. Being from The Bahamas where is like royalty to be a musician and a good one at that, some keyboardist i've seen here is like always with a nose turn up in the air, i'm better than you, my church has a bigger band, that type of attitude. and if you ask them ta teach you...GEESH, that's like pulling a few teeth. But me, I am truly a saved church musician, no shame in my game. I'm at bible studies, and I plan to get into the Seminary classes well be onstream at our church soon. Our administrator just got back form Dallas Theological Seminary with his doctorate and he's getting the classes togther. Let me say this much; as a musician we have a serious call on our lives and the enemy will attack us more just because we are doing something he was in charge of in heaven (remeber?) So we have to sensitize ourselves to certain attacks. I'm humble everytime I sit behind that Korg Triton, and if there's any sin in my life, I deal with it so that God can truly use me and be glorified.

There are musicians and ministers of music with bad attitudes, but let's not stereotype or label everyone as arrogant.  There are some mild mannered and humble people working in music ministry and some of us are just shy.  Take time to get to know someone before you label them.

I would like a handout as well:  yates016@bama.ua.edu

I've been playing for years and can understand the pressures of being a musician.  It is not easy working with "church folk."  However, that does not invite the right for a musician to have an attitude.

Before I started playing the keyboard and became the minister of music at my church, I was the drummer.  Our head musician at the time had a really bad attitude.  He would come to practice 45 minutes late, and then want to practice all night long.  He felt as though we couldn't have church without him.  Don't get me wrong now, he played the organ and the keyboard and he was awesome, but he just had the wrong attitude.  He eventually left because he was offered more money elsewhere.  The funny thing is at his new church he is under a strict contract. He can not be late for anything, if he does it is deducted from his check.  He even has to be on time for Sunday School.  We run into each other from time to time and I can tell from his facial expressions that he is miserable.

So to all my fellow musicians out there, lets try to have a positive attitude at all times.  I know we are human and it is hard sometimes, but we must.  We are being watched at all times, not only by God but by children in our churches.  Many of them look up to us, wanting to be just like us.  This is our chance to influence the young and old in ways unimaginable.
