what approach did you take to learn that song? i listened to that song for a long time and attempted to learn the bass line but i would get distracted (being in awe) by jamerson's style or just the song by. that whole album is tight. that album "What's going on" by Marvin Gaye is a must have for all bassist.

No, I it's a Peavey Fury IV (4 string).  I'm glad you thought is was a Musicman, that makes me appreciate it even more.  :D

I used Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ ) to slow the tempo down and listened to it a million times (well...close to a million).

I agree with what you stated about the album What's Going On?, I think the song Save the Children is one of the greatest performances of all time, that ending is sick.  I've tried to learn it's but it's way over my head, I need a pro to help with that one.

Thanks for the feedback.  I've been playing for 3 years.

What your signature says about "perfect practice" is the key.  However, I still have trouble spots on the fretboard (i.e. finding/remembering where some notes are).  I need to discipline myself to spend equal time learning core fundamentals as I do just learning songs/styles that I like.  Does anyone else struggle with this?

As for the tone, I'm flattered from the responses.  I dunno, I have a <$400 bass w/ DR Low Rider strings (which I don't plan on ever changing, they're so smooth).  The Lord works in mysterious ways, it's just something else to be thankful for.

Its hard to "buckle down" and know your fundamentals. Especially when you can play well by ear. Trust me, when you incorporate fundamentals (theory, scales ect...) in with your ear playing, you will reach a higher level of expression. Its tough, but it pays off.

I'm in Indianapolis too.

Good advice, I'm sure it'll pay off.  The only problem is the discipline.  It seems like the only time I work on fundamentals is when I get burn out of listening/learning or when I don't feel like playing, but still want the bass in my hand.

Go Colts!
