Here is a quick question, which would you rather be known for holding down a awesome pocket, or having an awesome but unique style?

It's all about the pocket.  While it's great to be able to do all kinds of runs and fills it doesn't mean a thing if you can't hold down a groove.

while I agree that a solid pocket is vital, it can be agrued that all professional bass players have pocket presence, is there really such thing as having a better pocket then someone else? I feel, either you are in the pocket or you are not, where I think your style comes in to play. Peace!

I don't do a whole lot of runs and tricks on bass.  If I'm slapping, I'll vary the frequency and timing on the pops, but I don't try to do any speed licks on bass (that's why guitar is my main instrument   ).

i think pocket. i feel that uniqueness/flavor can be injected a little with pocket. but pocket is the foundation.

there have been various posts right here....ooooh...look at this...ahhhh..look at that!....none were even remotely in the pocket...

if your goal is to be in the pocket...you will never be know to any one but the drummer who asked you to be there!.....

your basis should be the pocket..but your goal should be everywhere else!

good point, I mean that just makes total sense, and I am not easily persuaded, I just can't seem to find where my style is, I have a good pocket but it just seems so bland to me and I always end up doing more then I should, I need to continue with my re-education of my pocket presence, peace!

I have to go with the pocket.  To me, being in the pocket not only means I've hit that zone as far as the groove is concerned, but I'm also working well and laying a strong foundation for the other musicians I'm playing with.
If you dont believe there's such a thing as having a better pocket then someone else, listen to Vic. Wooten or J. Patorious when they are jamming out.  Their pocket protection is just nasty!

I think I'd rather have a great pocket. When the bass and drum are connected, it creates a groove that everyone else can follow. Since I've been playing, I realized that during a song if you stay in the pocket, it sounds twice as good when you eventually do a fill or something creative. I'f you're pulling out all your tricks playing the main riff, your creative fills won't stand out as much.

you can have both. You can have a certain style of pocket. Take Jamerson for example, he was all pocket and he was all style at the same time.
