I have a question from the Hartwell DVD
« on: January 04, 2006, 11:07:01 AM »
Hi,

I've been re-visiting the Hartwell Urban Worship DVD, and I have a question....

In the Ab movements, he uses a 2 chord tritone passing progression:

Moving down a fifth from c#maj7 to Abmaj7:

LH/RH

FB/EAC#
EBb/BbAbC

I would like to use this type of passing progression in other keys, but I don't understand why he used these particular notes....

Can someone help me out?

TIA,
Eggs

I think I know what you're talking about, Eggs.  The progression in Ab goes something like this:

AbCDbF/EbAbC
FB/EADb
EBb/EbAbC
EbGAbC/BbEbG

then the following passing chord:
AEb/FAbDb

My guess is it's a 2-7-3-6 movement in Ab b/c the chords seem to work with those bass notes.  So if that's true then I think the chords would be:

AbCDbF/EbAbC (Bbm11)
FB/EADb  (G13(#11) without the V)
EBb/EbAbC   (C7(#9#5))
EbGAbC/BbEbG  (Fm11)

then the passing chord would be:
AEb/FAbDb  (F7(#9#5))

I might be thinking too hard here and I could most definitely be wrong.  But I think it's just a different way to voice these chords.  I bet with a lot of practice, this sort of thing comes naturally.

TDiesel,

I see your point.... but I'm still confused.  This is from Jamal's section on
movements in Ab, and I guess it's the idea of things centering around the base note that's confusing me.

I think this pass is based on a 5-1 move, from Ab to C#, and I can live with the fact that the second chord in the pass just moves everything down a half step.... cool....

but how does he chose FB/EADB based on the base note?  And... when he plays a chord in the left hand like EbGAbC(Abmaj7), what's the base?....
Eb or Ab?

Thanks,
Eggs

Sorry,  I meant a 4-1 move.
