Newbie and hand position
« on: January 10, 2006, 01:06:43 PM »
Hi All,

I am begging to try an play my Bass well enough to play with my Church’s Praise group and Gospel choir. I play the sax but I want to try the Bass. I’ve toyed around with it for many years but nothing serious. The last 2 weeks I’ve been doing different exercise I found around the internet and books and things seem to be going well except, I don’t think my fretting hand positions is correct. Someone saw the way I positioned my thumb on the neck and suggested that I move my thumb down on the neck and not to turn my thumb sideways too much.

My question is, Could someone please explain the proper thumb and finger position for your fretting hand?

I’ve read several article and books but, to me none of them thoroughly explain this part or maybe I just don’t understand it.

Also, any advice on how much discomfort I should have when starting and any tips you guys may have.

Thanks and God Bless

Bimmerdad

Bimmerdad, welcome to LGM! You will have discomfort beginning to play bass. Finger blisters, neck & shoulder pain, back aches, sore wrist are common. But don't stop playing!!!! Any discomfort will go away quickly. 8)
