worship- on/off the instrument
« on: January 12, 2006, 09:17:10 AM »
i posted this question a long time ago but got little response, but i think it is something we should think about.

do you think it is possible to enter in to God's prescence just as effectively, and have the worship be just as deep great and awsome for you personally on your instrument and through your playing, or do you feel like you need to get up or get off and worship?????

It's very possible.  More than once I've been touched while play, and I'll begin to cry.  It's hard to stay in tha pocket when you're ballin like a baby LOL.  But musicians aren't exempt from worship.

It's not easy to concentrate on anything while you're playin tho, because you don't want to lose your timing and throw everyone off.

Well, personally, I've encountered both. I don't think you have to be in any particular state of mind to experience both, as far as saying that I can only worship if... I feel that anyone can experience God on or off your instrument if you're willing to submit to the move of the Spirit. I also know that God can take your playing to another dimension if you do have a worship experience on your instrument. My theory is just let the Spirit move and subject yourself to it. I would also pray and ask God to help me to use wisdom in those moments, because you,  as a music minister, are a driving force, a platform so to speak, in the worship experience on a corporate level, and you don't want to be out of line just jumping off your instrument all willy-nilly. You know what I mean? Anyway, good question. I hope you get more responses. We need to smart up the forum a little bit with intellectual discussions .
My goal as a musician is to be better than myself.

I worship while playing the instrument, but to me when I'm not playing I can be more focused because I don't have to look for cues or be mindful of what's going on around me in the service.  On the organ when we go into corporate worship, I have to pay attention to whoever is up, so I can follow them, on the drums I follow the organist.

It's good to see a lady checking in on the drum side especially a multi-instrumentalist. Ladies seem to worship a lot harder so it is good to see feedback fro myour side on this subject.

As far as playing while worshiping I think that it will show how much your are prepared or not in your playing in general. All to often we use our eyes to give and pick up/follow signals when in music our ears are our eyes. In the kingdom our ears are our eyes... faith comes by hearing. And the bBiblle has many other references to hearing.

We as musicians need to develop to the point that our playing is as natural as breathing so that we don't think then play, we play and respond. A number of blind musicians ... Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder being the best known, play with musicians and cannot see a thing out side the "vision" or their mind. THis I, I feel, should become a focus of ours. This will require each of us to ask some deep questions of whether or not we should be or are ready to minister through our choosen instruments. Reason being this kind of ability requires a deeper commitment to the stewardship of the gift of music and ministry and servatude.

I Believe you can worship on and off the instrument . I prepare myself Thanking and praising GOD for the gift he gave, and to anoint me to minister in music so when i am worshiping on the set it will bless someone in the congregation. I hope i answered your question correctly.

I like that.  I will drop this bomb though; We should also develop our Spiritual Ears and Eyes by.......here we go.........Fasting and Praying. As Minstrels, our playing should prophecise and tell people that are listening the goodness of God.  (This can get very deep. 8) )

Oh yeah, some of my greatest worship experiences have been off of the drums and just being ministered to.  Not to say that I haven't had really great experiences on the drums.  One is, receiving the Baptism of the Holy Spirit........off the drums. :D   Praise God!

I love when the band is in one mind and everyone on stage is in the right flow the worship leader picks the right song and I can't help but close my eyes and cry.
One song that can do it for me is "Breathe" by Michael W Smith and it's always in the chorus. There's something about "desperate" lyrics that get me everytime. I love that song.

I feel like u can experience worship both ways, i love worshiping and focusing on God while im on the set, its something about just being deep in worship especially when ur on an instrument just knowing that ur ministering unto God on ur instrument.  But i also want to encourage all my fellow musicians  that worship is not just what we say or lifting our hands to God, but its a lifestyle, and when it becomes a lifestyle that when we can experience the presence of God in our lives like never before

for the record
#1- worship is a lifestyle. it is submition to God and as we do submit his manifest prescenced is continually revealed

#2- i think it is possible, i mean there are times where i have been on the drum set just weaping, and deeper than i have ever been off my instrument.
a few years back i told God that i didn't want to have to get off - as we hear a lot of musicians say- to be able to truely worship and get to the deepest places. so he has taken me on a journey that has shown me how to do it and the Holy Spirit will begin to show and tell be things to play that express what i am feeling and experiencing in that moment and even as i do those things it takes me even deeper.
although there are times to get off, you don't HAVE TO. and it is more awsome not to have to but to keep praise and worshiping right there from your spirit and heart straight to GOD from inside of you and and not needing words and things we have just learned from church words- which can sometimes become routine and empty at the beginning or worship, your worship will somehow seem more pure and true... truly intimate from your spirit to God's.

Great topic!

This is a good topic, worship is def a lifestlye and when we get on the drums or whatever instrument it is another way in which we can express our worship to God, just like we have (or SHOULD!) been doing thru out the week. sometimes i find when i'm off the kit, when u r left in awe from God's presence and you cant quite find the words, i jump on a kit i can express it thru my beats!
there is no greater feeling knowing everytime you jump on the set you have brought the holy spirit with you and ur worship is acceptable in God's sight, it brings home the responsiblity we have as music ministers....

its like some examples in the O.T, who would go out at the front of the battle, blowing the trumpets, worshipping!?!?? worship would defeat the enemy!! awesome things can happen when we bring the fire and when God plays thru you so guys, ladies stay built up in the spirit and as you spend time in practice....WORSHIP and then we you come to play in church, it will just be another chance to express that personal worship between you and God!!!

there r endless possibilites with God!! He will give the incresase, He will help expand ur creativity, if u let Him!!

Blessings!

nice topic man and......YES GOD!!!  I love worshiping on my bass every Sunday. It's so sweet man. Sometimes it gets really good to me and I be tryin to man up and not cry, lol, but ya'll know how it gets, sometimes it just feels good to let loose, let go, and let God have His way, ALL THE WAY!!!  Sometimes I may even say my worship is sweeter and more intimate when I'm on my instrument than when I'm off of it. That's our gift!!

yeah that is true man, sometimes not knowing words causes you to get out of the spirit to learn them then try to get back in (if that makes sense) that's why I love praise and worship songs with fewer words

you brought up a very good point that i hadn't even thought about really
but
i was talking about the stuff we learn to say and do in worship- bless your name, lift up holy hands, etc.
not that they are bad or nonbiblical things, they just become routine and in the beginning of worship time are sort of empty- .
when you are not really using words but your true actions, how you play what you hit etc. God can take you to a place where it is just coming from the truest place within you.... the most genuine place.  i think it's like that because it is not something learned it is whatever is truely inside from your heart and spirit being expressed in a way only you can express it and only God can recieve because it isn't like speaking to him, it is pure expression.

i am trying to get this out clearly and in a short manner but it is not working.

kind of like an original dance to the Lord, it was not a "learned" thing from being in church or around church people but straight from the Holy Spirit's unction and your spirit and heart. it is intimate and true., so it is like a whole different level in your worship.
i've had times that felt like times when i have been layed out on the floor but i was still playing going deeper and deeper.
it is hard to really explain
i would really advise you to ask God to do this for you, it can be an all the time/everytime you play occurance.
