What's a good (fairly cheap) main snare?

I just bought an all-maple Pacific CX drum set in the black onyx finish, but it didn't come with a snare, so ... What's a good main snare for under say, $200?
Has anyone played the Pacific CX snare? Should I even try to get it? What do you think the best snare is under $200?

Yamaha Musachi Oak 13"x6.5 " is the cheapest GOOD snare at $195-220.

Guitar Center should be able to give it to you for $200 with tax if you bargain with them.

i play the cx series snare as my main snare rught now and its fairly okay. its definately not a musashi tho.

yeah man the musashi is going for like 200 at musicians friend so i know you can finit for that atleast.

Wow... Musashi dropped in price. it was $220-$240 last I checked. I might have to pick one up now at that price.

I would go for the Musashi or the Pearl Free Floater Steel Snare. you can get it for around $200. and the cool thing about it is, later on, you can switch the shell to get a maple, copper or brass. here is a link for the cheapest I have seen...

it could be but you could fix that with the head, the way you tune, and maybe a little muffling- plastic exterior muffle ring.  and then you would still have a really good snare

I got my musashi for $200 and you should check it out. I use it as my main snare and it's a good snare. Right now I got a booboo head on it. I can't wait to change the head to really get the oak wood's juices flowing.

tama has a limited addition artwood snare 7x13 maple for 160 on samash.com and i think i like it more than the musashi it has a more deeper and warmer sound but change the head asap

i forgot about that snare
that would be the one for you
it won't be too loud but will give you a lot of the great qualities of the musashi like good crack but still having body and good low end projection
i would get that

Any drum could be loud for a small church paticularly a 10" or 12" snare or a picolo or a steel. This is why I suggested the 13"x6.5.

Tuning is also a factor (though I don;'t change my tuning that often, I tune for the drum majority of the time with snares.

The BIGGEST this is to play under control, regardless practice dynamics and stick control.

I play a Yamaha Oak Custom 7x14" inch snare. The oak isn't as loud as my Pearl Joey Jordison signature snare.

I love the tone of oak. Very warm feel to it. It feels sooo good to hit because it's just crisp. You won't get that very high snap out of it, but an extremely nice rich deep tone. Thats my oak snare, not the musashi.

What about Pork Pie snares? If I can get one of those for under $200 should I? What about the Mapex Black Panther snare? It's pretty good too, right?

Current Options:

I can get a Mapex Black Panther 10" X 5.5" pretty much new, with nice, upgraded heads for about $150.
There's also a Mapex Black Panther 14x6.5" black chrome steel snare that I'm looking at.

I can get a Tama PS 255 stainless steel 10 lug snare 5.5" X 14" w/ Evans coated G2 on top, Ambassador on bottom, Puresound wires, and an Evans EMAD for $155.

I can get a Pearl Maple 4x10 Snare w/ new Remo Ambassador heads on it for about $160. (Ha, the only thing with this one is, it's the natural maple finish so that doesn't really go with my black onxy set, lol.)

So...out of those choices should I get one of the above snares or stick with the 6.5"x13" Yamaha Musashi / 7"x13" Tama Artwood (which doesn't exactly match my black onyx set, either...lol)?

Just buy a pearl piccolo for 119.99 at guitar center    it will do wonders or by a spaun plexi glass snare for 219.99 and talk to a good person who will cut you a deal.

Nahh, I have a Pearl Piccolo snare on eBay right now that I wasn't too fond of. Maybe it was just that one, but either way ... I don't think I want another Pearl Piccolo snare anytime soon. I'd like to try something a bit different this time.

So out of the choices I had listed in my previous post, which is the "best"?

i havent heard the  black panther but i do know that the pork pie 12x5.5 little squealer has been their best selling snare this year. i wanted to order one a month back but couldnt because every store on the east coast was sold out!!
