As a secular and gospel musician, I have to speak on the repeated bringing up of this topic. I know the new people have not been privey to these prior conversations, but because I make money as both a secular and gospel musician, it strongly offends me when people get so holy and righteous and one sided on this issue.
This is my thought: The church (the black church) is full of women. Women probably out number the men 4 to 1 or perhaps even more. The black church is full of women with children, single women raising children. Uh, how did the child get here? Momma was rollin' at one time. And then they get so righteous they can't listen to a love song??? THAT is hypocrital if you ask me.
Secondly, the sanctity of any relationship that is intimate and of a romantic nature can certainly have many sides, including spiritual, mental, emotional and physical. Did the pastor's kids just happen to get here too? No, they were rollin' also.
As for the music, when Christian people make love, do they listen to Donnie McClurkin, Joe Pace, Albertina Walker, "Praise Is What I Do"? Is their life so sterile that they can't even let go for that? Maybe they just lay there like third base in utter silence and wait for it to be over, counting the cracks in the ceiling.
If you love to dine out (as I do) are these holy-rollers casting out the devil and binding satan during the entire meal while the Musak system is playing background music? "Lord Jesus, let me finish this meal quick before my soul is burning in hell for eternity."
Further, and finally--who wants to be around church-folk all the time? Not me. Everywhere I eat, socialize, enjoy the fruits of my labor in my leisure time? No way! Mind you, I'm not out fornicating, doing drugs, or drinking--I'm just enjoying life! I went to a dinner with some "church folk" two weeks ago. The program started late, the food was awful, and it was the most boring dinner conversation I've experienced in a long, long time.
As Bishop Noel Jones said: "If you ever get delivered from anything in your life, make sure you get delivered from church folk!" Amen to that!
