Who can read drum music?
« on: January 20, 2006, 10:57:22 PM »
I'm in the process of teaching myself to read drum music.  I'm starting with the snare, which is usually recommended. Counting out loud, starting slowly, all that. My thought is that it can only help. Reading charts and learning theory puts you at a new level of musicianship.

I wanted to know who on here can read drum music and if anyone is in the process of learning and how is it coming.  Also, I'd like to hear from those who can read, how they got started and maintain their fluency.

Hopefully the replies will balance out with the views.  Thanks in advance.

I actually taught myself to read when I was around 13 in Jr. High. I’d buy books and cassettes from the “Bargain Box“ at the music store.  When I got to high school my jazz band teacher helped me with understanding charts.  I definitely need to start reading charts again though. I’m very rusty.   It’s been awhile.

I tought myself how to read my freshman year in high school.  I had to learn to play in the bands.  Its an assett to say the least.  Because I can read and understand music theoy i feel like other musicians respect me more as a rounded MUSICIAN than just the drummer.  Its going to be frustratiog but its worth the grunt work!  Because i can read, I've been able to do theatre work that pays quite nicely $$$!!!  Everyone should do it!  Its one of those good peer presure things!  Your folks won't try to kill you because you and your friends are experamenting with reading music!

Give it a shot!

I played horn in school so reading was part of my daily concert and marching band life, when I made the switch to drums reading was easy,  it was learning all of the rudimental notations that took me a while. I started reading drumset music on my own after I graduated now I just look at it from time to time to keep my knowledge up.

Thanks for posting this topic beantown. Since we're on the subject, does anyone know of any literature that teaches you to read drum music? I've been a participant in band since 8th grade so I know how to read regular music (I played trumpet, trombone, sousaphone; mainly trumpet). I'm highly interested in learning to read drum music. My favorite drummer, Lil' John Roberts, inspired me to learn to read drum music, but I don't know where to start. Do they have these types of books in music stores? I only see books for guitar, keyboard, and things of the such. I would appreciate any response to the question. I'm very hungry, so any feedback would be a great meal  .

I learn to read drum charts in high school. Sightreading drum charts is mostly about reconizing and remembering patterns. All the rudiments are written in patterns. So when you see that pattern enough you will remember how it sounds and how to apply it. Sugabear, if you can read horn charts, then you can read a drum chart. You just need to learn how a drummer thinks when  it comes to drum charts. It's not all that different when it comes to the patterns.
I just did a studio recording that required sightreading and the charts were hard. One chart started in 5/4 then when into 3/4, back to 5/4 and 4/4, etc. It was challenging, but fun.

That was a good question.  I'm in the same boat.  I do not want to be limited.

Hey everyone, thanks for your input. Keep it coming.

Sugabear, believe or not, I'm actually using the Complete Idiot's Guide to Playing Drums. I actually bought it about 4-5 years ago but never got into it.  Problem w/ procrastination but that's another story.  It has actually been helping me with my reading.  Examples, counting out loud, having the words "one, e, and, ah over each note in a sixteenth-note phrasing, etc.  It has been helping. But let's let others respond to see what the books they come up with.  A private teacher is always best.  But depending upon your learning style, literature or video may be the way to go.

I agree with you completely, hallchamp.  Once I have drum theory down, then I can move onto the piano as well.  But drums come first!

Yeah, beatboxerz, time signature is challenging but fun.  I just learned to recognize 9/8 and 6/8 time though I've been playing it for years.
