I'm very much a beginner myself, so I know what it's like to hunger for info.

by the way, if there's anything you want to know about theory, try to google it!  Just about everything can be found SOMEWHERE online.

Other than using the blues scale, what else can we use for our runs?

I've got you covered on the 12 bar blues in all keys. Don't worry.
Just believe...

I've found that if I use the scale of a chord I'm playing in my Left Hand, it works more times than not.

If i played an inverted AbM7 in my left hand:

Eb-G-Ab-C

Possible Options:

You could then try the Ab Major Scale(Excellent)

The Ab Blues Scale(Excellent)

the F Minor scale (F being the Relative Minor of Ab)(Works pretty well)

The Eb Major Scale(works pretty well)

The G minor Scale(MIGHT be able to get away with it.)

or th C minor scale(MIGHT be able to get away with it.)

This technique is based off of information received by hammondman.  Check his post: "Left hand chords and Right hand soloing.......beginners addition"

It will help you ALOT.

thanks, but 2 question. why does the  F#, and the Gb have different scales when they are the  same note? i thought if you were playing in F# you were palying in Gb. One scale can't be used for both?

THANKS!

Unless I'm misunderstanding something here F# and Gb are the same and the blues scale posted for them are the same, they just termed the notes differently.
F# and Gb Blues scales
F# - A - B - C - C# - E - F#
Gb - A - B - C - Db - E - Gb

F# = Gb
C# = Db
All the other notes are the same....

As gtsjames stated, they're identical.  F# is Gb, and C# is Db
