Bass or Keyboard????
« on: February 06, 2006, 05:29:52 PM »
I've been teaching myself to play the bass at my church and everyone says it carries the service better but I am thinking of putting it down and learning the keyboard. I figured that I could be more of a help on the keyboard because I attend one of those old fashioned "jesus on the main line" singin churches and I am hoping to modernize it. What yall think, could it be pulled off with the bass or should I learn the keyboard?
Give a man chords to a song, you help him for a day. Teach him theory and you help forever!!!

Why not learn both?  Or better yet, play a real instrument: the guitar!!! .

Why not challenge youself to carry the service with the bass.  Keys would be the easy way out.  You may want to ask the keyboard guys.  I'm pretty sure you would get a biased answer either way.

I run the bass with my keyboard if you play the bass you only have that one instrument. If you play the keys you have all the instruments that you need.

I've been waiting on this...  B3wannabe would disagree with me but the bass guitar is the modern churches HammondB3.  Church music has gotten so R&B, Soul, Funk and Jazz oriented that you can't really master modern church music without a bass. Of course I'm impartial to bassist because I am one.  I also play keys...not an expert but I can hold basic chords and run a bassline with my left hand.  Point being...I would never consider giving up bass for keys...that crazy man  Seriously though the reason I prefer bass of over playing bass on the keys is that keyboard players can duplicate basslines that can't play them.  Only a bass guitar can play play bass lines.  You may get the notes but you don't the slides and slurs, hammer ons and offs.  Wins of bending a strings, triplets, quads, and all the unique little tricks you can pull off with a bass.

Sounds like to me...you want a modern, more full sound.

Pray and ask God to send you a keyboard player is what you should do...worked for me.
