I missed the first few performances because I was at church but caught most of the program. I thought all in all it was just "alright". Everybody has dancers and seems to want to keep up with their secular counterparts on BET. Not trying to negatively criticize, just stating my opinion. I'm glad I DIDN'T see Shirley Ceasar rapping!!

I enjoyed Sheila E. And she looks VERY good, too. Do yo' thang, girl!! I also enjoyued Kelly Price and Bishop Morton.

Okay now I'm gone say that my favorite part was the 2 seconds my favorite singer in the whole world got to do her thang. Ms. VANESSA BELL ARMSTRONG during the Bobby Jones tribute. I was wanting more of her, but she did her thang and got the audience on their feet. And she looked absolutely amazing!! I don't care what nobody says, she's the ONE. I don't always agree with Oprah Winfrey, but I'll take this opportunity to quote her now. Oprah once said "I don't care who you are, or how well you sing, you will never, ever outsing Vanessa Bell Armstrong!" I'm with Oprah when she right!! :)

I feel about Vanessa the way Herman feels about Karen!! And Karen is one of my favorites too. Wish she was there but there were no Clarks on tonight. It was aiight!!

Hey, I was talking with my fiance about the very same thing concerning everybody having dancers now.  It's so crazy how that is such the fad now.

Yeh I agree, what the heck was he thinking when they invited him.  He should've done that song that I see every week on video gospel.  Yall know, the slow song that he is singing behind a track on.

Exactly. I was glad we actually got a little bit of "real" church with Shekinah Glory (they should have showed more of the worship), The Bobby Jones tribute, and the Bishop Morton/Kelly Price duet. Those were the only moving parts of the program for me. The only real satisfaction for me was seeing Vanessa Bell (if y'all can't tell by now, I'm probably her number one fan)!

MY question is :

Why is it that we tend to see the same artist every year? Every gospel program or award show?

kirk, donnie, mary mary, shirley,etc.

Why do we not promote other gospel artist as well?

One more thing.  Why does Juanita Bynum always what the spotlight?  Have you ever watched her on TBN?

LOL....I don't know what yall were expecting.....this is after all BET.....with an emphasis on the E.

I never viewed this program as being devoted to worship.  In the past shows they have usually had more of a mix of GOSPEL and SECULAR artists singing gospel.

I'm so over the SHOWMANSHIP thing.... :-\

AMEN and AMEN and AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!

While I have some respect for these artists and buy their CD's, I too am sick and tired of seeing the SAME artists ALL THE TIME on every program. That's why I wasn't even planning on watching the program at all until I found out Vanessa Bell Armstrong was going to be on there.

You can rest assured that EVERY time there is going to be a gospel program, Kirk, Mary Mary, Donnie McClurkin, Shirley Caesar, CeCe Winans and now Tye Tribbett are going to perform. The only surprise was that Yolanda Adams wasn't there!

And Prostr8, you told the TRUTH!! This is nothing but ENTERTAINMENT! All the dancers and "rapping". I wish people would stay true to their own game. That's why many worldly people don't respect gospel because they see it as a "copycat" music, with everybody trying to be "cool" like their secular counterparts. I mean we even had Shirley Caesar trying to rap! Give me a break!!! >:(

I, oo am over the showmanship thing! Whatever happened o the days when artists would just get up and sang the "stew" out of a song and usher in the anointing and really have some CHURCH!!! The slogan for this year was "You need a li'l church in your life". Well, this wasn't it!!

Wow,

I thing I'm going to have to agree with Lilman on this one.   Although I do believe that Shekinah Glory did their thing, I didn't see anything wrong with  what Shirley did.  I mean if you think about it, there are probably some people who would never give Shirley the time of Day, but when they see her rappin ( or at least trying), then they are willing to listen to what she has to offer. And believe me I know Shirley Ceasar will hit them with the word.

But overall I liked the show.  The song that mary mary did is currently one of my all time favorite songs.  Kirk does what kirk does and I can't trip because he was the reason I started buying Gospel music ( him and the OGG's, I know many of you don't know who they are, but for those who do... I was really feeling them).

I agree, I wasn't feeling Micah Stampley's outfit either, but that dude got some serious  RANGE.

I have only watched the first half of the show (on tivo). I'm gonna watch the other half tonight.  So I haven't seen Vanessa B Armstrong do her thing yet.

Um excuse me, but I can talk about Shirley Caesar all I want, 'cause I have been a fan of hers since probably before you were born!!! I also have a right to voice my opinion about ANY gospel artist I want because I have spent enough money on gospel music in my lifetime to buy a house! And anyway, that's my point. Shirley has always been able to reach people because she is Shirley! AND SHE AIN'T NO RAPPER!! I don't know where y'all get off thinking the only way to reach "young" people is rap!! That argument is so old and tired and needs to be given a rest. Shirley is in a class all by herself and my point is SHE DOESN'T NEED TO PROVE ANYTHING TO ANYBODY BY TRYIN' TO RAP!! I ain't sayin' there's anything wrong with rap. If that's what you feel God has called you to do, then go for it!! I ain't faulting Shirley for trying something different either. It's her right as an artist to do that, just like it's my right to not like it!! This is not a debate about rap so don't turn it into that. One could argue back and forth til the cows come home about the best way to "reach young people", but THIS discussion is about what we liked or didn't like about the Celebration of Gospel and everybody's entitled to their own opinion. You would think we would have learned that by now!!!

It's all good, and ain't no maturity lost here. My feathers just get a little ruffled when someone tells me what to say and what not to say and about whom, when I have a right to an OPINION just like anyone else. If you like Shirley Caesar's added "flavor" (since of course her music had absolutely NO flavor before, right? ::) then that's your opinion and you're entitled to it.

As far as her changing for anyone, it was your post that mentioned that she needed to add that "flavor" to reach the young people, because church otherwize "scares young people away". I never said that. Also I'm a young adult myself (under 30), but I've been listening to gospel avidly since I was 5 years old, and so I feel I'm entitled to give an opinion on it.

IMHO, I STILL believe that we should separate ourselves from the world.  Rapping is not becoming of PASTOR Shirley.  It's nothing wrong with putting a little flava in a song or word, but doing it the way the world do it is not the way.

The Gospel Celebration was aight.  From the way they were advertising it, I was expectin it to be off glass.  But anyway, I wish a couple of other artist would've performed, like, Hez, John, Kurt Carr,Donald Lawrence, just to name a few.  But, of course, as stated earlier, they ain't gon show nobody but the same people.  The performances that moved me were, Tyrese, Kelly Price and Bishop Morton, Mary Mary, and Shekinah Glory.  Tye and Shirley were alright.  I wish they wouldn't have went to commercial every time the spirit started to move in the place.  I mean EVERY TIME.  Like someone else said, the theme was "you need a lil church in your life"  I didn't feel that vibe, except for when the few artists that I named, performed.  I look up to Kelly Price, soooooooooo much.  Her voice is AMAZING! I remember when she came to our church when we had our womens conference, it was so TRILL.  When I tell you the holyghost was all up and through that place, I mean it.  Her voice is so annointed.  And when Mary Mary get into their songs, their voices are incredible.  I could go on and on about who's voice moves my spirit, but I'll spare yall.  Much Love!

Shekinah Glory was the bomb. I almost went in on that song. To me, I think that everybody can not do that song. I'm glad the lead singer was there. Her annointing is what makes the song.

I AGREE WITH YOU LOOPY!  SHIRLEY CAESAR is not exempt from criticsm.  I don't question the integrity of her ministry.....but I was disappointed by her actions at the CELEBRATION OF GOSPEL.  I mean for real.....it's like looking at my grandmother trying to rap.  She's paid her dues....she don't need to be going through a whole lot of changes just to be "relevant".  I've noticed this trend with her....first it was the duet with Whitney HOuston, and then Michelle Williams, then Kirk Franklin, and now Tonex.  I'm not knocking her hustle, yet  she's quick to talk about not compromising.  I just know she ain't been around in this business for this long without being concerned about record sells, etc.
