Yo man, not to burst your bubble or anything but my boy gary from brooklyn was the first person to start doing that Jay-Z intro in the shout and now I hear everybody doing it.  Not that it's a bad thing but I just wanted to let you know.  No disrespect or anything of that sort.  Plus you're playing with Justin so it's cool.

Hmmm.  I wouldn't call it stealing.  Everybody hears something they like and emulates it.  I've done it.  Every good drummer takes things they hear and will be like: "I'm gonna try that the next time I get on my kit!"  That's how you grow man!

Yes. You try it the next time you get on your kit - then after that, you figure out a way to make it your own. A person should have their own identity in music, I feel. We do learn from each other - but their is a difference between learning, and blatant theft.

In music, for some god forsake reason, it's tolerated. If you were a rapper, and someone wrote a song, using your flow, or your words, you'd be heated.

Let's stop making excuses for the lack of creativity that's so prevelant nowadays. If I can make a conscious effort to find my own identity/voice, then everyone can too.

Sorry, I ain't budging on that one.

The drummer was way too busy, and the sound quality was lacking greatly.

You have to take  a lick/riff and make it yours. Don't borrow it steal it outright. Take it to another level.

It's not just music it is art as well. I if you take it you are expected to raise the bar using it.

not razzing you just chiming in...

That's the point I wanted to make, but forgot. This IS an artform ...

However, their is a difference between a performer and an artist. Artist's create .. performers do just that.

Not every artist is a performer, and not every performer is an artist.

Strive to be both.

You know Dennis Chambers when you  hear him. You know Vinnie when you hear him. You know Chris Dave when you hear him...

Why can't we all be that way?

Ok, let's use rap.  Do you know how many times I've heard some beats?  A hot track will come out, and you see 2 or 3 rappers flow over the SAME MIX!  Remember Lumidee's "uh oh"?  That wasn't original, and the same mix was used in at LEAST 3 other songs off the top of my head.

Do you know how many times I've heard the same shout?  I'm speaking in terms of Organists now.  Keyboardists exchange Chords, riffs and licks.  Organists exchange Chords, riffs and licks.

I do agree that we should make music our own.  If you take a keyboard riff and play it note for note and don't add anything, then you haven't really learned.  We should definitely add new licks and grooves to our vocabulary and put our own spin on it, but sometimes a groove is meant to be played a certain way.

If I teach someone something, or they hear me do it, and I hear THEM do it, I wouldn't be like: "What!  He stole my fill!"
Nah.  Why?  I'd be honored that someone would learn from me.  So if he heard a shout and did it in his church and turned it inside out, would it mean LESS because he heard it somewhere?  ???

This is just my opinion.

Nothin but love and respect yall.   8)

Dude, the mainstream is greatly lacking in creativity. Normally it's the underground where you here the TRUE artistry. Dudes who aren't making music to make a buck. That's what I'm talking about...

I don't listen to rap anymore - but, back when I did, their was no 'robbery in broad daylight', like their is nowadays. Sure, some people did ...  but it was frowned upon heavily.

Right.  He didn't just post his soundclip with no foreword.  He stated where he got it from, so we wasn't tryin to hide anything to let people believe he created it.  He was honest about where it came from.

Well, looks like nobody's gonna budge on this one  :D, so I'll just agree to disagree.   :)

To be frank, my problem really wasn't with him, exclusively. It was with the fact that I've heard this shout everywhere. Coast to Coast. It was more of a general critique of gospel musicians ... even though it probably came across otherwise.

Not quite, but it's about as bad as that shout from Hezekiah Walker...

I've heard this everywhere, but I didn't know it was from a Jay-Z song.  I didn't know it came from Brooklyn, either.  I thought it originated from Baltimore.

I hear all yall..In total honesty, da shout was first created by my boy Travis in Brooklyn...Its like 5 years OLD!! lol So no way would i post it and be like i made it up. BUt there alot of folks who have never heard it before...da hits dat i added afta da break were sort of my idea. In terms of creativity, if u rearrange the chords for da break, den it wouldnt be da JAY-Z shout now would it! Das like taken Chick Corea's Spain or Coltrane's Giant Steps and changing the hits/chords! U change the whole sound....I must repeat its a shed...Sumbody might say we stayed on da breaks too long, if it was a real service, nobody would still be shoutin. We kno dis. Dis is actually a good way for an organist and a drummer to work on their timing, drummer to work on licks during the pause between the Jay-Z break into da hits. It an 8 count pause where U let da drummer take it and bring it back. Maestro divine, da groove afta da shout was original I guess i'll post sum more original grooves den next time!...one more thing all da posts im puttin up are from one night..im jus postin dem up little by little, and jus to show sum younger drummers how to groove wit a organist/keys player.

drummer was good. I liked some of his shout tricks. Imo play sum of them tonight at tha district meeting lol. Im not gonna even pretend tho, the keyboardist sounds so elementary on the groove part. It seemed bland with no flavor at all. Very repetitive. Because I'm sort of leaning towards the keys, i pay alot more attention to them. Other tahn that. The drummer was good.
