Help Me Please
« on: March 16, 2006, 03:41:24 PM »
If someone can help me please do. When I sit at the keys I don't know how to play the chord progressions that other people play, if I am saying it correctly. Everytime I read the theory I recognize that I have already understood what is being said. I do have some trouble though. Does a song have to follow the circle of fifths , or fouths or do I use these just as guidelines to help me create or to analyze the music? When musicians play slow beautiful music they often tell me it's not really much, just some chords. I can hear that it is just a combination of chords and it sounds wonderful but what chords are they talkin bout? I cannot stand not being able to understand what is going on.  Is there a system that is allowing them to do what they are doing? Are they using the circle of fifths or fourths exclusively or is it some chords they have came up with on their own or is it a combination of both? I know how play a songs by ear but I want to be able to know the theory behind what I am doing. When I try to imitate the sound in the circle of fifths I try to do what they are doing using the circle only. Is this possible? Should I experiment with the melody and just take the song wherever the melody sounds good?

Tired and confused
Please help,
Qwan

In truth, you almost would have to write a book to fully answer your question, but the fact that you even asked it means you are headed in the right direction. I came from being classically trained, and (mostly hating it) apply my classical theory to gospel and tweaking it to understand how gospel works. Now, to talk a little about what others are doing. The truth? Some of them really don't know, and therefore can't tell you, they just do it. If you find one who does, corner them kidnap them and hold them hostage until they give you their secret. Now me, I usually play some type of progression that has a theoritcal foundation. I have not just thrown chords together and pray they fit. I may do that someday to experiment. I really can not fully explain to you in a post what is going on, but personal message me your phone number if you are comfortable giving that out, and we can talk a little about it to get you started in the right direction.
